Have I broken my finger?

Funny story, potty training my toddler today. Was on the floor giving her a pep talk, clearly she needed a wee, ran away from me, I jumped from the floor with the potty to chase her. I slipped and I bent my finger right back picking the potty up.

I can bend it, but it's so swollen and getting more swollen and sore as the hours have gone on. My partner thinks it's badly bruised and not broken. Im convinced broken. But can anything even be done for a broken finger? Got it strapped up at this moment

Go and get it x rayed a minor injuries clinic now. We can’t tell from a photo.

If you can bend it it's probably not broken but looks very sore. I feel your pain. I've broken my toe before, I couldn't move it at all and could see my toe was misshapen. I just strapped it to my other toes until it healed about 3 weeks later. I don't think there's much else you can do but I'm not a medical professional.

Ouchie ouchie ouch!!!

I'd be inclined to head for a minor injuries unit, sorry.

If it is broken they will need to check is all properly aligned before immobilising it to let it heal. I did something very similar to one of my fingers as a teenager. It was dislocated with a hairline fracture, but healed pretty quickly without too much pain once aligned and strapped up!

That's exactly what my partner said about when he broke his toe. There is literally nothing that can be done. I've never broken a bone in my 29 years😂

The more I look at it, the blue bruising is travelling down my hand. It feels numb, but also not numb at the same time

Look up avulsion fracture, looks similar to DS1 finger when he had it from catching a ball wrong.

GroovyChick87 · 03/01/2025 14:59

It might still be worth getting it checked out if you can get there today. I find these things get more painful as time goes on because of the swelling. Keep it in ice.

DS broke his finger playing rugby and it looked exactly like that. It's definitely worth getting it x-rayed to confirm, as depending how/where the break is, if you just leave it there's a risk it doesn't heal properly. DS ended up with a special custom made splint as his was very close to a growth plate and they were worried about how it would heal - although this is probably more of a risk in children who are still growing. We ended up with follow up appointments at a hand trauma clinic who were brilliant in making sure it healed perfectly with no lasting issues.

They do put plastic splints on broken fingers. I broke my little finger last year and they put a plastic casing on it and strapped it up. I left it too late before I had it x rayed and it didn't heal properly and is now permanently crooked.

CrushingOnRubies · 03/01/2025 15:30

Get it checked out at local MIU. No one has x-ray vision to tell from a photo. It is probably just badly bruised but worth getting checked out lots of ligaments and bones in fingers which if they don't heal properly can cause issues.

Sebsaloysius · 03/01/2025 15:33

Looks very, very similar to my first finger when I fell and landed on my hands. It bruised just like yours over the course of the first 24 hours, it hurt like a bugger but I could still bend it, although it felt a bit pins and needles-ish. I tried to ignore it for over a week, but the pain didn't improve and I could no longer bend it properly.

Long story short, it was properly broken and I ended up having surgery to re-align it and having the most ridiculous splint for 5 weeks. I was told that if I sought help earlier, it was likely they could have manipulated it without the need for the op!

My advice? Go to a minor injuries unit or OOH GP.

I was told the same thing. At different times, I broke both of my little toes and there was nothing they could do. The main thing I recall about the 2nd break was not being able to wear shoes for months. I had a note from the doctor so I could wear flip flops with my business wear. 🤣

Did you get it seen to OP?

I hope it's feeling a bit better either way!

QuestionableMouse · 03/01/2025 19:53

Don't fuck around with joints, eyes, hands or burns. Go and get it checked.

Ooooo you poor thing! I hope you're back home and comfortable.

On the positive side you definitely have the best potty training horror story ever.

Fair to say mr and that potty aren't on the best of terms and until this finger heals I want no part in potty training😂
