I’ve just started going swimming at my local leisure centre. What are your swimming essentials? In hope that I haven’t forgotten anything!

Swimsuit
Dock and Bay towel
Goggles
Wash bag (with shampoo, conditioner, body wash and body puff.
Hair ties
£1 coin for locker

Yeah I was going to suggest headphones too. Mine were generic unbranded ones, bone conduction over ear headphones. They're amazing! Hold loads of music, last quite a long time between charges. I wouldn't be without them!

Which ones please? Shokz are so expensive.

And daft question, do you think they'd work ok if you had earplugs in? Sick of swimmers ear so trying out plugs now...

Hard agree re the yuckiness of bringing a razor to the pool. The showers are there to get clean before you swim and get rid of the chlorine afterwards. They are not an extension of one's bathroom.

But I talked this over with a RL friend who swims and she doesn't have a problem with it.

They are just normal shower cubicles , not used for pre and post swim rinse off, there's showers poolside for that.

Each to their own though

Swim socks are added to the list. I can’t bear the floors in the changing rooms. They seem clean enough, but I don’t was to risk getting a foot infection

Hair turban and a Synio Shower attachment. They are great for those pump button showers that turn off every 10 seconds.

Edited

Gosh. That’s genius. Will be getting one of these when I get paid!

A good buy. I wear them too, well little swim shoes, just because I can't bear it. They're not waterproof though so I don't know why I bother but I just hate walking barefoot!

I bought swim shoes but I hate the feeling on my feet when they fill with water

Do you definitely need a coin for the locker? First time I went to the new one near me I discovered I needed a padlock for the locker and because I was over a barrel I had to buy the one they conveniently sell!

I always use a padlock (I use a David Lloyd* pool) but a good many people don’t bother, which does surprise me, because a neighbour who works at the local police station told me that thefts from lockers are fairly often reported.

*Which is not cheap, but I knew when I joined that the cost would make me go at least twice a week, in order to get my money’s worth. Plus it’s much more convenient than any local authority pool - the nearest of which is closed for demolition/rebuilding, and God only knows when that’s going to happen.

They haven’t arrived yet but off the back of this thread iv bought two hamman towels from a Turkish shop that have a website that sells their Turkish delight online but have a bit that had these and a few other home items. They were on sale for £7 each. So thankyou for the recommendations.

NessaSmith · 12/01/2025 19:58

Hope you like them @Ginkypig! When I go with the DC I take them as they take up so little room. When I go on my own I lug a massive normal towel!

Ginkypig · 13/01/2025 19:06

So happy with my new towels! I also got a pack of two traditional Turkish exfoliation gloves.

i can’t believe how good they are. I got one in blue and the other is purple. Only £7 each! And the gloves were really cheap too and I think they will work well.

please excuse the background it’s my bedding the towel is so big they are huge! (that’s it folded to quarter size) I needed to use the bed to take the photo.

thankyou everyone for the recommendations. @NessaSmith i haven’t used them yet but if they are as absorbent as they are pretty then they will be my new favourite things!

You've inspired me to dig mine out @Ginkypig I really don't need to take a massive one! Not sure when I got into that habit but my bag weighs a ton and I'm sick of it.

Let us know how you get on! Try one after your next shower!
