Cut up a super king duvet to make standard pillow cases

How many pillow cases do you think I could make from a super king duvet or a king size duvet?
There are no pillowcases in my fave duvet colour way on sale, only duvet covers.
Do you think I could make 4 pillowcases from a king size duvet if I bought two duvet covers.

Not good at maths. They would not need to be Oxford style, just plain. My dear DF would have worked this problem out in two minutes.

thoughts welcome.

Doesn't the cover come with two pillow cases?

Mum5net · 02/01/2025 23:17

No, just a duvet cover…
pillowcases separate and sold out

230x220cm that’s the duvet cover both sides so double this

Oxford pillow case: about 50x90cm

So you’d get: 11.2 cases based on just maths
but cutting up and sizing you would get about 8

Lying on my bed with the duvet this sounds about right.

Why don’t you just spread a at home duvet and pillow case on top and see how many fit?

Measure an existing pillowcase for us, and remind us of the size of the duvet cover, and we can do the maths.

Cross posts!

You can definitely make four pillowcases from a kingsize duvet cover.

KatyMac · 02/01/2025 23:23

I'd have thought unless you want loads a single duvet cover would work

Kingsize are great to make wedding dresses from - loads of fabric

DiscoBeat · 02/01/2025 23:23

I never use the pillow cases anyway, I prefer silk ones. Can you buy some in the same color way?

MiffyBuns · 02/01/2025 23:23

You won't need 2!

A king-size would make loads!

Sgtmajormummy · 02/01/2025 23:25

To make an Oxford pillowcase finished size 50 x 80 cm plus 20cm envelope you’d need a strip 55x 185 or larger if you want to French seam.
A King size duvet cover is 200x250 IIRC so you could get 3 from each side and plenty of leftovers. Use the 200 cm side for your 185 cm length.

PickAChew · 02/01/2025 23:27

You would get 4 easily.

Each pillowcase is 50 by 75.

So that would be a 50 by 150 strip plus 15for the flap and about 2.5 for the hem at each end. With a 1cm seam allowance down each side thst would make a 52 by 170cm strip.

A double cover the same on both sides would be more than enough for 4 as that is 200 square.

You could use the offcuts to make cuffs for bought plain pillowcases, or there’s the “burrito” method cuffed pillowcase that doesn’t have an inside flap.

Mum5net · 02/01/2025 23:29

So I could buy a super king for the bed?
and a double for the pillowcases x4

Edited

They only have super king for and king left.
i think that’s my answer.
Thank you.
My DF would have been proud of you

burrito method

Mum5net · 02/01/2025 23:33

@Sgtmajormummy
Its a checked pattern
will that make a difference?

OP posts:
KatyMac · 02/01/2025 23:36

It it mirrored in both directions - so symmetrical both ways or is there a top and bottom

it shouldn't make a difference but if it has a top & bottom be careful when you are cutting

Sgtmajormummy · 02/01/2025 23:38

If it’s very directional, yes.
But you should have plenty of fabric.

Mum5net · 02/01/2025 23:38

I think it is mirrored @KatyMac

Just calculating mentally you should get 4 standard pillow cases out of a super king size duvet cover. At least.

NeddieSeagoonsSteamPoweredTelephone · 02/01/2025 23:44

I take it you have an existing super king duvet cover of any pattern. That has two layers, so equivalent to two sides of a pillow case. Lie four of your current pillow cases out on the super king duvet cover - if they fit, with enough margin for seam allowances, then you will have enough to make four pillow cases. No maths required!

Mum5net · 02/01/2025 23:47

@NeddieSeagoonsSteamPoweredTelephone
I should've thought of that... thank you

Thanks all
