On the radio when it's conversational have they literally had the conversations already?

..is the whole thing scripted and rehearsed? Especially the jokey bits where there's a few of them and they are all chipping in with a bit of the joke.

Just wondered.

I don't know but I'm curious about this too! If they rehearse it, I wounded how they keep it 'fresh'? Or do they just decide they will generally talk about something and then zone in on it after the break?

Hope someone who knows can enlighten us...

They script it yes, and have scripted "ad libs" - and a lot of the matey producers etc actually hate the 'talent' - especially if the 'talent' cannot 'drive the desk' so basically just chats. A proper DJ is a wonderful thing but many these days are just awful!

I wonder the same about Graham Norton, it's obviously very scripted but he has a way of making it sound natural. I think its scripted bullet point style, you tell anecdote and I'll make a comment etc. He has obviously rehearsed the funny comment but not told the guest so the reaction is natural. That's my reading of it. Guests are briefed on each other and what they can and cannot make reference to (I presume)

@user23124 thank you, that's interesting! I think you can sometimes sense when the producer has to tactfully massage the DJ's ego...

I will add that I work in a very high end service environment - think 5star hotel/michellin restaurant - our USP is relaxed and chatty whilst v high service - we practise all our chit chat and endlessly repeat "spontaneous quips". Most people cannot maintain hours of witty charming chit chat without a script.

What do you mean by talent in this context and what do you mean by drive the desk?

What radio shows?

Whats funny is many people think Stand Up comedy isnt heavily scripted. Like they just turn up and tell stories. Every inch is scripted. Ditto pantomimes where something goes wrong and everyone thinks its unique to their performance. The whole world is a lie!!

user23124 · 01/01/2025 16:38

Talent - the dj
Ie Scott mills etc
Real djs can use all the equipment 'drive the desk' celebrities who are hired for star power often cant and the producer does a lot of the tech stuff.

Spirallingdownwards · 01/01/2025 16:40

I used to script check a well known TV show which you might think was ad libbed for libel before it was recorded!

You gotta be shittin me. Gogglebox is the fakest of them all. All the reactions are overdone to a tee. They even got Caroline Aherne to marrate it originally as it was so akin to The Royle Family.

user23124 · 02/01/2025 12:12

all the panel shows are scripted too - and many of the 'comedians' have writers write the answers for them.
