New Year's Day washing superstition - can I fold clean laundry?

Does the washing prohibition extend to all laundry related activities or just actual washing of clothes? Can I fold and put away clean laundry?

I think you're safe with folding and putting away. It's the washing of it which is supposed to be symbolic.

amoreoamicizia · 01/01/2025 09:34

Oh goodness, what prohibition? Never heard of it. I have a tonne of laundry, I've two massive plastic bags of it sitting in the bedroom!

Miffylou · 01/01/2025 09:35

What?? Never heard of any superstition like this! Surely you don’t really believe it, whatever it is?

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/01/2025 09:35

Yes, you're OK with that 😁. I have lots to take off the airer and put away. Made sure I cleared the washing machine backlog yesterday though.

PokerFriedDips · 01/01/2025 09:37

How ridiculous to pay any heed to such a silly notion. What kind of spiritual entities do you think exist and have influence over your life that will be affected by what happens with your household fabric today? Perhaps they will be assuaged if you wear a tin foil hat while doing it?

Thelondonone · 01/01/2025 09:38

Basically washing on nyd may wash away a member of your family/ftiends. It’s nonsense (but I still don’t do it).

amoreoamicizia · 01/01/2025 09:38

Really disappointed to have learned of this just before I started tackling the Heap.

Do I get to select which one?

Proteinbananas · 01/01/2025 09:39

It's made up nonsense so I guess you can make up what rules are part of it as you wish?

Pedallleur · 01/01/2025 09:40

Only after a sacrifice has been made to Persil the Laundry Goddess.

Pandasnacks · 01/01/2025 09:41

I’ve never heard of this before today, then someone posted it on a popular Facebook group and now I’m seeing it everywhere. I must have been blind to it before! Anyway it’s a load of crap so wash/dry/fold what you want

Berga · 01/01/2025 09:43

You can't tidy or sweep either, in fact it's best to just be and not do on NYD. At least that's what I told DH.

ememem84 · 01/01/2025 09:45

I’ve loaded the machine and set the timer so it goes off tomorrow morning and will be done by wake up time. Piles of laundry sorted to be washed.

Chocolately · 01/01/2025 09:45

But do not even think of getting the iron out! 😳

Come to think of it, there should be a blanket ban on all housework on New Year's Day. Take a break from it and do something more enjoyable.

BIossomtoes · 01/01/2025 09:47

I’ve never heard of this and my washing machine’s spinning right now. 😱

I'm ancient and have never heard of this superstition so is it a regional thing?

First footing is just about the only thing I can recall being a strict one from my childhood.

embolass · 01/01/2025 09:54

Awww great, I’ve just done a load of darks 🙄

Boredlass · 01/01/2025 09:57

The superstition is bollocks and I’m amazed people actually pay attention to it. I’ve done washing on New Year’s Day for years

UpTheMagicChristmasTree · 01/01/2025 09:58

My Grandma used to say it washed away the luck for the year. I don't know, I think if you're going to have a good or bad year it will probably have little to do with whether or not you've washed some clothes.

MsPug · 01/01/2025 09:59

Oh give over

Mine too!

MonickerMonica · 01/01/2025 09:59

Is there a spooky superstition about doing housework on New Year's Day because I'm not lifting a finger today 😋

MargaretThursday · 01/01/2025 10:00

I've never heard of that one and my Gran (who we'd normally have been with) was a fount of all superstitions!

I'm doing some. We normally would do some if we've been away, so I'm sure we've probably done some more often than not.

dementedpixie · 01/01/2025 10:00

I had set mine to finish at 8am so we are all done for!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 01/01/2025 10:03

We will 100% be doing washing later. Currently toilet training DS2, so the washing machine already has a few bits in it already that I don't particularly want to leave till tomorrow
