Anyone up with an awful cough?

I’m up for the 5th night of not sleeping due to the most horrendous cough I’ve ever had! I’m taking:
paracetamol
codeine
strepsils
bronco stop
throat spray
sudafed decongestant
gargling salt water
drinking lemon and honey tea

nothing is giving me any relief! I’ve started wetting myself with the force of the cough! Saw the gp yesterday who said it was viral and wouldn’t give me anything.

ive got a raging sore throat and ear ache, anyone else got this? Can anyone offer any advice for relief??

I have never had a cough like this before this is much worse than the cough I had with Covid!

im utterly fed up!

thanks for reading x

Sounds like you've got Covid again 😢 Sorry, you must feel like crap.

The things you're doing are cough suppressants. As they aren't working well enough, maybe try going the other way - stop the Sudafed, start taking a guaifenesin cough syrup, and inhale steam. See if you can loosen the gunk so it comes out with less coughing.

And stay warm! Good luck. Happy New Year?!

I've got a cough at the moment, two things that help are steaming (I have a steam inhaler but a bowl of hot water and towel over head will do) and Covonia cough lozenges. Also propping myself up at night rather than laying flat.

I had a cough that wouldn't shift for months on end. The GP suggested that I used a particular nasal spray and a antihistamine tablet twice a day. Unbelievably quick recovery.
I hope you get some relief soon. It's no fun

I'm just getting over a similar bug with a horrible cough and like you tried everything. The biggest help was a vaporiser with eucalyptus peppermint lavender and teatree and Vicks vapor rub on my chest and neck. .

Simonjt · 01/01/2025 03:37

Is it a dry cough? If so you can get cough medicine that surpresses the cough reflex, like robitussin.

Witchywoo41 · 01/01/2025 03:43

Thank you for the responses, I’m using vic vapour rub. Steaming in the bathroom two or three times a day, I’m going to try a dish and towel now.
its a dry cough, I just feel utterly miserable with it!
happy new year!

I know it sounds like an old wives tale, but I swear by Vicks rubbed into the soles of my feet, with a pair of socks then put on. It stops the coughing. DH and my parents all do it now too and it works for them too.

Witchywoo41 · 01/01/2025 04:42

Thanks @magicstar1 I’ve been steaming for the last hour, I’ll try that now!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who posted, I actually feel a bit better wether it’s the advice kicking in or just not feeling so desperately alone that’s helped, thank you so much. It’s the worst thing being the only one up all night and not being able to text anyone in rl. I feel like you’ve saved me!

I've now developed back and shoulder pain on the one side - not sure if it's because I've got a chest infection or just muscle strain from the coughing 🤷🏼‍♀️

CountryShepherd · 06/01/2025 17:12

I had a terrible cough for months and months - turns out it was a side effect of Ramipril, blood pressure medication.

I've spoken to a few others on it, they've had the dreaded cough too.

Omg, me! I started feeling a bit sick a day or two before NYE and it got progressively worse. I have a headache, my gums hurt, my sinuses hurt a bit and I have a semi-dry cough which just goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on…

Pills don’t seem to help so I’m just drinking lots of liquids. I’ve had a looong bath today; not sure it helped. I feel too weak to work (even though I work from home so I feel I should push myself). I guess im glad I wasn’t sick over Xmas

What can I say..Don’t die ! 😉😘
