Just that- British Gas have no appointments until Monday and it's forecast to be -2 most nights until then. Is there anything I can do?

Try other companies/local engineers? May not have anyone tonight/tomorrow and could well pay a premium but better than being freezing for a week

Put the immersion on, run electric heaters, or even have the oven on. Run taps regularly to be sure.

@Liesmorelies
Where are you, what is the air temperature outside, and what type of boiler do you have?

If it's freezing outside, your condense pipe might be frozen and blocked. A hairdryer will unfreeze it, unblock it, and the boiler will work. It's the white plastic pipe.

If it's a combi boiler, check the gauge on the front of the boiler. If it reads less than 1 bar, you need to refill your system a little. How to do this depends on your boiler. Either Google. Or post the make here and I'll tell you how to do it.these are very common faults, so worth asking about them.

Would house insurance cover an independent coming out to fix? It might be expensive but worth getting sorted asap.
I'm crap at this sort of stuff.

Thanks @HappiestSleeping It's been mild recently, including tonight so I don't think it can be frozen tonight. It's more from tomorrow onwards that I'm worried about.

It's not a combi and is around 10 years old - a Patterson. It was serviced less than a month ago and no issues found but it has needed resetting quite a bit recently and that's no longer working.

OK, was worth asking. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Check your home insurance, we discovered that we had emergency boiler breakdown cover and the insurance sent someone round within 24 hours.
Also do you have anyone in the home which would make you a priority services register home? If you do, I'd be pushing back at British gas for an earlier appointment (guessing you have their home care cover).

Have you got bubble wrap? Wrap it around the outside pipes you’re worried about.

RainbowSquare · 31/12/2024 23:31

Very very slim chance of pipes freezing. What sort of system is it? Gravity fed? Pressurised?

Is it a modern house or old?

Get a local fitter in if you can get a recommendation from a trusted friend.

They arent gonna bend over backwards for someone who's not an existing customer either. Monday's not that far away.
