Does anyone else find Auld Lang Syne the most depressing song ever

And refuse to ever sing it at New Years?

Depressing lyrics, depressing tune in general. If I watch the fireworks on tv I turn it off as soon as that tune starts playing as in years gone buy when at parties it's put me in a really solumn mood when it's supposed to be a celebration!

I thought it was mean to be. Those that sing it up-beat have it wrong.

yes, every year I find myself confused about the meaning and every year, the number of interpretations seems to increase 😂

It may as well say "happy new year! Now be depressed as hell!"

I don’t get anything depressing about it at all. It’s literally about reminiscing about the past. It doesn’t say anywhere in the lyrics about this being a sad event. In fact the last verse is take my hand friend and let’s have a good drink and reminisce. There’s lyrics about running through hills and paddling in rivers, none of which strikes me as depressing.

I’ve always felt it as a conversation between either a couple or life long friends happily spending time thinking about their life journey together and given it’s mostly associated with weddings I’ve always found it joyous - especially coupled with the big circle and the running together, which is my best memories of weddings and the happiest way to end a night with friends and family.

It’s about friendship and love for those with us and not with us. Not depressing at all. Nostalgic maybe.

I find the tune depressing too!

I get ya. It's got a funeral theme ring to it which makes it rather forlorn.

Anothernamechane · 31/12/2024 02:14

What's depressing about it? It's basically saying old friends shouldn't be forgotten

I actually like it as it's remembering old friends.
It's also a tradition to sing it on NYE and I like that too

It's depressing. It makes me think of the young people I know who have died and aren't with us when they should be.
