Has anyone else been told they need a medical by the DVLA?

I've been called for a medical by the DVLA who are paying my GP to conduct an examination for them.
I'm not on benefits and although I have glaucoma the testing has been extensive and very thoroughly evidenced.
The eye-doctor says I'm fine to drive so what is this all about?
It sounds very dodgy to me, especially when the practice receptionist asked me to read the letter to her as they have never had this happen before.
Are all drivers being given a medical now?
Do you think they are doubting the consultants ability?

I had one in November. I have a 3 year licence as I have MS. Usually my consultant just writes back and says I’m fit to drive. This time for some reason they requested a medical - I had to pay £128. Was so pointless. My GP went through a form with me, said of course I’m fine to drive. My licence expired in March and still have not received my new one.

Wow!

That sounds even dodgier!
It says on my letter that the GP will be reimbursed by the DVLA for my medical!

I’ll have to look back at my letter! It was a total waste of time.

Could it be that someone has reported your driving?

My mum volunteers with Age UK, and a couple of times has had to report people driving, who really shouldn't be.

RuthW · 16/11/2025 11:52

It’s not unusual for a gp to do a DVLA exam. They are usually when they sent a form to be filled in that needs a bit more details.

LividArse · 16/11/2025 12:15

My mum got one of these letters when I reported her to the DVLA for being an alcoholic.

I do think it said why on the letter, though.

Not sure I understand the relevance of not being on benefits here?

I would be contacting the DVLA to ask why they are asking for this.

I took it as meaning the OP is not on any disability benefits, a disability which may affect driving and one which the DWP may have reported to the DVLA.

My ds ran out in august. He was seeing his consultant who said he’s fit to drive (his adapted motability vehicle!)

DVLA confirmed they have the paperwork but still no license sent through.

Toddlerteaplease · 16/11/2025 13:29

I had one for MS. It was very thorough. And absolutely fine.

I have my new licence now - just takes months each time but you are still able to drive. I think the reason it went to my GP is they my neurologist had been signed off sick (I didn’t know they at the time of posting)

Jfhehheh · 16/11/2025 17:21

Maybe i have made some people angry or upset or they dont like my nee exhaust on my bike but have to fill inn the paper work about all the drugs i have done and it lists all the drigs where and when and to send it back to dvla swansea within 21 days

Jfhehheh · 16/11/2025 17:22

In the letter it says sorry we cant tell you who the third party is. Under some rule..

For me it does not asks me how much alcohol i consume a week or a month, its only to do with drugs..

How old are you, OP?
