Kenken - any advice how to play?

I tried to do Kenken in today's Sunday Times, it's my first time and I thought I had an idea how to play it.... but I got stuck very early!
Any advice out there?

Thanks 😊

I started with the 11 in the middle - can only be 5 or 6.

That means the 3- next to it can only be 1 & 4.

So the 6x can only be 2 & 3.

The 40x at the top can only be 2, 4, 5.

Etc.

Thanks @nestingvillage!

I have made a mess of my Sunday Times, so I have drawn it out on a page (twice!). Quick question please.... so the rows and columns need to use 1 - 6, but the "boxed areas" don't? I am assuming this because I can't make 17+ using 1 - 6 singly.

(Only at it for 3 hours now 😆- part of that was redrawing the grid)

Yes, you can repeat in the boxed areas - 17 has to be 5, 6, 6 I think.

Got it! I was seriously about to give up - but a couple of numbers cracked and the others fell into place (relatively - not very!) easily.

Thanks 😊
