I've got a really bad headache

I'm getting a bit fed up now.

Day 5 of headache, it's getting worse and I don't know what else to try. Only now is it stopping me from doing things but maybe that's because I'm tired. Any ideas or sympathy, it's in short supply here?

  • doesn't feel like a migraine, no visual disturbances like I've had in the past, it's more ache than pain
  • regularly taking paracetamol and ibuprofen
  • asked at the pharmacy today and got codeine, had 4 so far but not touched it

Sorry I know it's stupid to ask about medical things on the internet, I just don't know what else to try and gp seems overkill plus they're shut until Monday.

Feeling sorry for myself now.

Okay - I have just realised how long you have had this headache. It is highly likely it is stress related. I've had periods of stress including one where I was prescribed diazepam because I had awful neck pain and headache that wouldn't go away. I even had physio on the NHS. I've had similar periods of stress about three times. As soon as the source of stress stopped, everything went back to normal. I struggle with stress much if the time. I'm in peri menopause and do not sleep through the night, which just adds to things, but the prolonged really bad stressful periods have been horrific.

Do you drink enough water? Are you stressed? Do you need new glasses? Could it be a sinus headache?

BoilingHotand50something · 10/01/2025 21:09

@crackinghead did you go back with your tingling hands?

I rarely get headaches unless self inflicted but have had similar to you twice and it was a tension headache, it was so painful and lasted a good week then just went.

Possibly NDPH (new daily persistent headache). There are preventative medications that you can take. You need to make sure you are drinking enough water, cut out all caffeine including chocolate etc; cut out painkillers (including paracetamol) and make sure you are getting the best sleep you can.

Yes I went back with tingling hands and a quivering tongue. They still think tension headache and a trapped nerve too at the top of my neck. Been prescribed amiltriptline (sp?) which is helping.

Things are a lot better than they were. Thanks a lot for asking and all the comments, really appreciated.

Tongue still quivering which is so weird!

@crackinghead hey! How did you get on regarding the headaches? Ive been exactly the same! Not sure what it is x

Irisilume · 12/11/2025 16:13

I get migraines and they can vary in presentation, so it might be worth taking a triptan on the off chance it works.
