Anyone growing out their short hair?

Come and keep me company if so 😄 - I've been growing out my short pixie cut for a few months, and it's just painful.

I think I look like a bouffant mushroom.

I’ve been trying and failing to grow it out for 10 years! I always end up cutting it again.

AutumnalBaker · 25/12/2024 15:12

Short pixie btw.

YellowRoom · 25/12/2024 15:13

Me too - my hair's getting bigger and bigger but not any longer

Oh good, I'm not alone.

My hair is just so thick. I'm drying and straightening it to try to beat it into submission, but still the bouffant.

It does actually grow quite quickly, but my hairdresser gave it a tiny trim recently, and I think I should probably just take the pain and skip haircuts for a while.

My hair dresser says hair grown 1/2 an inch a month. I wonder if I'll look better by my birthday.

I had a short pixie for 10 years and loved it. Why am I doing this again 😄?

Me too. It's awful. It's much worse than I thought it would be.

It's getting quite long on top but the sides just don't seem to be growing at all.

My hair is quite thick so I look like a big bouffant mushroom.

Sympathy to anyone else going through the same thing.

Thursdaygirl · 25/12/2024 15:21

I just want to grow out my fringe, and that’s bad enough

Cocolapew · 25/12/2024 15:26

I just got shoulder length hair cut into a pixie which I had for years but forgot how much faff it is. So I'm growing in a short bob, everything seems to be growing except my fringe, it looks like a 5yo whose mum has hacked it.

Fireworknight · 25/12/2024 15:27

Mine grew out during the pandemnic and I’d wish I’d done it sooner! Obviously we were limited on having haircuts then which helped. Having hair of one length is so much easier to deal with.

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 25/12/2024 15:36

I definitely won't miss having to get my hair cut every 6 weeks due to it being so short 🙂.

I had mine cut into a long pixie in March and had instant regret! I've been trying to grow it into a bob before growing it all longer. Currently looking like a mushroom and hating it. Here for the solidarity!

SkaneTos · 25/12/2024 15:58

I am! I commiserate!

I had waist length hair, but cut it all off in May 2023. Had a pixie cut, and really enjoyed it! It was also great because I work in health care, so I need to wash my hair after every shift. It was nice to have short hair because it dried faster.

I have been growing it out now for a while, and it looked horrible in the beginning. I looked like I was in a 90s boy band, and then I tried to pin it back with hair pins or hair barrettes and instead looked like I was in a 90s girl band...
My solution for a while was to use a cute headband/Alice band. Then it looked okay.

Now I have okay looking bob, chin-length.
I might keep this for a while, and then let it grow longer again.

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 25/12/2024 16:11

You're living the dream@SkaneTos, I'd love to have a chin length bob!

I did love having short hair 🧐

I lost all my hair during chemo. I finished chemo in June and my hair started coming back in August. I had long hair my entire life and have no idea what I’m supposed to do with short hair. It looks awful and I don’t recognise myself when I look in the mirror. I would never in a million years have chosen to cut my hair short. I can’t wait to look like my normal self again!

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 25/12/2024 16:19

Oh no, I'm so sorry @Berlinlover - I hope you're on the road to recovery now.

I’m always growing out a short haircut or talking about cutting it short again! At the moment I’m growing out an a-symmetric undercut which was super short one side and shoulder length on the other! Had the long side cut to chin length and the short side is just about caught up, it’s taken about a year. I also stopped dying my hair so been letting my grey come in at the same time so my hair has been looking spectacularly terrible recently.

My plan is to have some sort of a-symmetric cut, just not as drastic next time.

DepartingRadish · 25/12/2024 16:25

Very short bob. Currently at the bouffant mushroom stage as I have fine hair but loads of it. I have previously grown out a short top and grade 2 sides so I feel your pixie cut pain!

Hair clips and hairbands. And resist the temptation to get it trimmed unless it really needs it.

I like short hair but I forget every time the amount of bloody maintenance it needs. I can't be arsed with traipsing to the hairdresser every six weeks. Plus the cost.

SporesMouldsAndFungus · 25/12/2024 16:26

I'm having an undercut, so it will look like a normal bob, unless I don't want it to and tuck it being my ears etc.

Probably just storing up the next Oh no, now I need to grow this out though.

Imicola · 25/12/2024 16:52

I've just got past the bouffant mushroom stage and it's now a short bob after 6 years pixie cut. I miss the shorter style to be honest... it always looked smart, didn't even need to comb it! Getting past the ear is the worst part, but now I've managed that i can hopefully reduce the frequency of haircuts. Not sure how long I'll last before I chop it all off again!

Middlemarch123 · 25/12/2024 17:06

When I grew out a pixie OP, my hairdresser just cut across the back quite short and blunt only taking tiniest snips off the rest. This avoided the dreaded mullet look. Also gave me a bob type line to try and grow the rest to.I used to tuck the sides behind my ears, and grew the fringe out. When the sides grew enough I had layered short bob, then grew the layers out. Now have a blunt just below the chin bob. Took about 10 months to get shortest layers out. Now toying with a pixie again. If I do it will be for keeps, because the growing out is a mare.

Justleaveitblankthen · 25/12/2024 17:07

I wish I had thick hair like some of you 😔
Mine must grow quickly as I trim my own fringe once a week.
The rest of it never gets past my bra strap though.
Snaps off, or that's it's terminal length I suppose.

KurtCobainLover · 25/12/2024 17:13

I shaved mine all off two months ago so growing out fr scratch. So far it’s about 2cm long and sticking up so not an attractive look. It’s also currently dyed purple so I need to decide if I’m going to keep bleaching and dying it or go natural whilst it grows (it was a bleach incident that led to me shaving it all off and starting again).

Sonolanona · 25/12/2024 17:52

I did it last year. Cut it off super short Sept 23 and instantly hated it.
What helped me was I took a photo once a week, and every few weeks I could look back and see the progress. I'm now 15m in and am still taking a photo once a month until I reach my 'cut it off again' stage. The first 4 months were the worst because I have thick fluzzy hair and looked beyond awful. Good luck!

Boffle · 25/12/2024 18:04

Yes! I have had a short crop for 40 years. Five years ago I grew it out only to lose it all when I had breast cancer. I absolutely loved the regrowth and went right back to my pixie cut.
However I started around 9 months ago growing it again. It's almost long enought to tuck behind my ears but not quite. I'm aiming for just below the ear all one length. I'm growing out my fringe as well which I've had since I was 20. Not sure it suits me yet.
I'm sick of hairbands and clips.
