Christmas Eve; why do I never sleep well? Wide awake

It’s the same every year.

Everything done. Not hosting. Kids no longer teeny so no worries about them getting up at silly o’clock.

And yet still here I am.

A night of restless/fitfull sleep and here I am, wide awake!
Every bloody year!

is it just me?

Nope! I get up early anyway but here I am admittng defeat and getting up after lying in bed wide awake for an hour and half already 🙄 DD and DH won't be up until at least 9am yet every year I can't sleep past 4.30am. So come 8pm I will be fighting to stay awake instead of spending time with DD + DH.
I put it down to my anxiety

ShyTealBiscuit · 25/12/2024 06:06

I never sleep well on Christmas eve either. My dc are still fairly young so I think it's a mixture of worry and excitement. I've been waking up regularly all night.

Every year I tell myself I'm going to get an early night but I'm usually filling the stockings gone 11pm and then I struggle to drift off because I'm worried about getting enough sleep 🙄

Scrabbelator · 25/12/2024 06:08

It's because you're excited about Santa coming!

leafybrew · 25/12/2024 06:09

Mornin all Grin I'll join the wide awake club (for no reason). I put it down to not getting any excercise yesterday and eating too much cheese after dinner.

CalicoPusscat · 25/12/2024 06:10

Do you sleep properly normally @maldivemoment?

I think I woke up at about 5am but I'm pretty much an insomniac anyway. You might have issues with sleep Xmas eve due to the pressure of food, presents, decs etc?

maldivemoment · 25/12/2024 06:12

@ShyTealBiscuit & @twistyizzy

so relieved it’s not just me. I often imagine everyone else doing the last minute, frantic things on Christmas Eve then falling into a deep & beautiful slumber. Meanwhile I’m wide awake, mind racing at a hundred miles an hour with every conceivable and Inconceivable thought!

Sigh…

Considering getting up but don’t want to wake others…

@CalicoPusscat

Don't sleep well at the best of times, no. Menopause, anxiety, etc.

Im hoping (saying out loud may jinx it!) but once today is over, I may sleep a little better tonight.

Unless your children are very young I'd just get up now tbh if you're wide awake. I'm up breastfeeding my 2 month old who has slept very well for a 2 month old. I would get up and go get brekkie etc now if it were not for the fact that bustling about at this time often wakes my older kids and they are only 6 and 3 and are always way too tired if they wake this early. And I don't want them all tired and grumpy on today of all days.

Also, personally unless I was a single parent and/or had any medical contraindications, if I was like you and knew I would struggle to sleep last night, I'd take a promethazine or other similar tablet to get a decent sleep tbh. Maybe something to consider for next year.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas and maybe can squeeze a nap in sometime??

Yorkshiredolls · 25/12/2024 06:24

Me too. Normally a good sleeper but tonight feel like Ive woken up every hour. Quite excited for when the kids opening the presents but its not that, I think Ive just been on alert to hearing my eldest get up who was very likely to be up at half 5 but ive actually not actually heard a peep out of her yet but here I am wide awake since 05:30 🙄

maldivemoment · 25/12/2024 06:28

Solidarity, sisters! 👊🏻
We've got this.

Hope we all have a great day, surrounded by people we love.

SulkySeagull · 25/12/2024 06:32

Yep, went to bed at 10pm, woke up at 3am and have been tossing and turning since - and now the kids are awake so no chance for me now! Just gotta hold it together till after lunch when I think a little nap will be in order

IBlameTheDog · 25/12/2024 06:33

Same!

When DS had his first Christmas I literally didn't sleep at all!!! Not a wink. I was rubbish over the years but seem to be getting better now they're older (18 and 20)!

Have a lovely day!

leia24 · 25/12/2024 06:34

I don't sleep well ever, but we are away from home over Christmas and I never sleep well in a different place! I'm so tired already.

PheasantPluckers · 25/12/2024 06:36

I do this, too! No idea why! My DD is still little but never wakes up early on Christmas morning! I'm always left waiting around for her 😂

maldivemoment · 25/12/2024 06:36

@IBlameTheDog

I could have written your post!
Although mine are 14 & 12. Still our babies tho…❤️

Arielsmummy · 25/12/2024 06:38

I am hosting but only 4 of us, everything's under control but I've been awake since 2. Last hour and a half listening to next door neighbours who are very loud through the wall...I've given up sleeping now

Frostycottagegarden · 25/12/2024 06:39

I'm here! Went to bed at 1am, which is two hours later than usual. Wide awake at 5.30am.

Nearly Grownup children asleep, probably until 11am. I'm going to try and nap again but not holding my breath.

icecreamscoops · 25/12/2024 06:40

Snap! I couldn't get to sleep ended up reading until about midnight and then the cat woke me up at half 5 and not gone back to sleep!

Theremedy · 25/12/2024 06:42

Me too! Didn’t get to sleep until at least 2am and woke up at 5:30. No little children to stress about, I can hear my 12 year old is awake but he hasn’t appeared yet.

Manic morning followed by an afternoon nap. I refuse to fall asleep during Call the Midwife of Gavin and Stacey!

maldivemoment · 25/12/2024 06:43

Right, I’ve decided we’re all in the same boat as it demonstrates how much we love and care for those around us. Be it children, husbands, wives, parents or friends. We care for them so much we lose sleep over it…❤️

My colleague, on the other hand, would call it ‘kin-keeping’! 😆

Either way, Merry Christmas from a wet & blustery Scotland!

Been up since 4. Well awake.
In the guest room, cuppa, muffin, headphones on watching ‘Dinnerladies’ which I love.
First watched it in my 30’s.
Now I’ve realised I am turning into Jean.
Other half is snoring his head off.
Happy Christmas Wide Awakers!

PurpleYarnivore · 25/12/2024 06:55

Snap, I went to bed at 11 , late for me, was still awake at 3 panicking I would be too tired for cooking etc , awake by 6. I’m a v poor sleeper anyway but mostly been listening to my mother whose staying with us and has advanced Alzheimer’s , up n down stairs all night , or my teenager daughter who I’m sharing a bed with snoring ! Excited for the day , but don’t think there will be time for a nap as doing all the cooking etc but desperate to watch Gavin and Stacey at 9 ! Merry Christmas to all.

SavageGarden23 · 25/12/2024 07:11

On chistmas eve caroling my son almost fainted so that put a spanner in our jolly mood.I had every possible weird dreams all night.woke up and saw a lovely crescent moon in the sky which made me think there's plenty enough time to fall lback into sleep.Turns out its 6.40 am. Considering putting some korean face mask on to fix my face .

twistyizzy · 25/12/2024 08:17

Just got back from walking dog + doing horse so blasting Carols from King's in the hope it will encourage DD and DH to surface 😆
