A thread for those on their own this festive season

Just wanted to check in with others and let you know you're not totally alone!

I'll see my dad on the day but that's it. I'm working the days in between and spending new years on my own.

Divorced earlier this year, no children (but a lovely cat), hence being on my tod.

Hope we can keep this running for the next week or so x

Can I join OP, not technically on my own as I have two young adult DC. We spend Xmas day with a sibling but other than that it’s just us!

My two DC have massive social lives and will rarely be here other than Xmas Eve pm and Xmas Day.

I’ll be spending a lot of time home alone, reading, catching up on some coursework, relaxing, watching TV. I quite enjoy it generally. Thinking of going to the cinema alone on NYE if I can find something I want to watch at a reasonable time.

ColdHenrietta · 23/12/2024 17:44

If only MNHQ could merge these all together …

ColdHenrietta · 23/12/2024 17:47

So you will be one of a group of four on Christmas Day, @MsXmasGGMasterTwat?

I must be awfully old - alone seems to have changed its meaning in my lifetime.

MsXmasGGMasterTwat · 23/12/2024 17:54

Fuck off @ColdHenrietta , OP used the phrase festive season not Xmas day.

Who enrolled you as the thread police? Oh wait, no one, so having put the OP right on starting a new thread, you’ve policed the fact that my ‘festive season’ doesn’t meet your rhetoric. My 11 days meet my definition of ‘festive season’.

As I said ⬆️.

Pastit12 · 23/12/2024 18:07

Well this has started well hasn’t it 😁

Goldenmemories · 23/12/2024 18:13

I'm not on my own for Christmas day but will be for the next 4 days as I'm separated pending divorce. Planning a long beach walk on boxing day then lots of gym trips when it reopens. Also will be doing some work on my laptop in the gym lounge. Not exciting but it needs doing and I don't like being at home at the moment- we're still living together.

Hope everyone can relax and treat yourselves in some way even if the circumstances aren't what you hoped for.

EachandEveryone · 23/12/2024 18:13

Me. I’m going through cancer treatment but have a month break from it. I feel tired and I have that horrible cough that’s going around. I live on my own and my lodger is away for three weeks, I have three cats, they keep me company. I have the cleaner coming tomorrow and I will go out and get my nails done. I have new pajamas and plenty of food in. It will be ok. I like my own company. I’ve had invites but turned them down.

New Year I’m debating whether to go up north for two nights. I will see.

Thefastplodder · 23/12/2024 18:21

Glad to hear that you have a break from the cancer treatment @EachandEveryone but sorry that you have to go through it. 💐

I’ll be the same this Xmas, just me and 2 cats for company and of course Mumsnet. I haven’t even decided what to have to eat yet, but will make a dash to M&S early morning, where no doubt everyone else will have the same idea 😄

Boxing day beach walk sounds lovely! I love walking down a cold windy beach.

My boys are going off to their dads tomorrow until the 29th. Although I'm working nights for the two Christmas nights I'll be home alone with my dog!

I do get to drive to Edinburgh on Friday to spend a few days with my new husband and who's been away working for 10 weeks so far!

I suppose the beauty of it is you can eat absolutely whatever you want!

Exactly! I’ve done my years of cooking the turkey and pleasing everyone else. Might well live on chocolate 🍫 all day.

I offered to cook this year to keep my mind off things, but given all the moaning that's happened so far I bitterly regret it 🤣

That's actually a brilliant idea, I might see what's on! I'm at work until 5 and was just planning on a takeaway and too much wine, cinema is a much better idea.

Seconded whatever you do hope you have a lovely restful time and you cancer treatment goes well 🌺

MsXmasGGMasterTwat · 23/12/2024 18:38

Best wishes @EachandEveryone , I was in your position two years ago.also with a break from treatment at Christmas. Make sure you rest as much as you need to before the next leg.

I agree that freedom to choose what you eat is a plus. Tonight I’m having sea bass, Pringles and Prosecco.. wouldn’t make it onto a menu would it!

I’m envious of beach walking, I used to live near a beach before I moved. I’ll try to walk at my local NT place every other day, excluding Boxing Day as it will be mobbed.

That's an excellent menu. I had a chicken kiev, roasted sprouts and breaded mushrooms 🤣
