Airport hand luggage

Sorry for such a stupid question but can I take a kindle and chargers in hand luggage? Do i have to put them in that tray thing through security?

Do I have to put eyeliners and eye crayons through in a plastic bag or just liquids? What about a mini pot of moisturiser?

God I'm not very well travelled. Would really appreciate your help.

Yes you should take your electricals in your hand luggage. It's liquids, gels and pastes that go in the bag (moisturiser would have to go in it).

Not stupid!

I’ve been pulled for eyeliner not being in with liquids before so add it now.

I take my kindle out and leave charger in.

Up until c6 months ago:

Pot of moisturiser would need to be less than 100ml and would need to go into the plastic bag along with any other small liquids.

Electronics would need to be removed from bag and placed separately in tray. Chargers can stay in bag.

However, several airports are trialling a new system where everything stays in the bag. Unfortunately this means a lot more bags being pulled over for checks. (Still 100ml max on liquids though).

In short: no one can tell you for sure as the rules are in flux at the moment. Best thing is to read/listen to the instructions at the airport. Don’t be shy to ask if things are unclear.

Put all makeup/toothpaste/lotions in a 20x20cm clear plastic bag, items can be a maximum of 100ml and everything has to fit in the single 20x20cm bag, Kindle and phone come out and go in tray.

That way you're prepared regardless of what the airport requirements are. If you get to keep everything in your bag it's a win.

You cannot take liquid through if it's more than 100ml and that includes water. There are usually places you can pour it away before you go through if you forget. Anything larger than 100ml will be confiscated.

It depends on the type of scanners used at the airport. I travelled recently and was told to leave everything including all electricals in my bag and only take out the plastic bag containing liquids. You will be advised what to do by staff doing the checks.

The kindle and charger are fine in your hand luggage, I think you're not supposed to put a kindle in checked luggage because ofbthe battery. You 0will have to put the kindle, but not the charger, in a tray, unless you're lucky and get one of the scanners where you can leave everthing in your bags - there will be signs.

My top tip is not to try to put everything into one tray, use two or three so that your phone, kindle, bag and coat aren't all squashed into one but are in single layers- a mistake i make a lot! Don't worry if your bag is pulled for inspection - you may have left something in it, eg bottle of perfume, or it could be a random search. Happens to me a lot, but causes just about a 5 minute delay usually.

I've always left eye liners in my bag, putting lipsticks, mascara and liquids into my plastic bag. Remember that you can buy toiletries at the airport past security or get them in a supermarket wherever you're staying, but they will need to meet the liquid limits if you intend to bring them back as hand luggage.

If you're in a hotel or BandB - and even lots of AirBandBs too - there will be shampoo, soap and probably conditioner, so you won't have to bring your own.

My top tips are 1 don't wear any make up so you can test expensive face creams in the duty free, and 2, bring an empty water bottle so you can fill it up from the water fountains past security, I just can't bring myself to pay £3 for a bottle of water.

Have a fantastic trip - travel is complicated and confusing, so

Thanks everyone.
I have kindle, electric hand warmers (Raynards), a powerbank, iPhone and iPods.

I have a clear makeup bag and teeny tiny pots of deodorant paste, moisturiser and toothpaste. A handful of makeup pencils too but those can squish into my clear toiletries bag.

I always feel a bit twp asking - airports always intimidate me!

The kindle definitely depends on the airport. You may well find it's one rule for the outbound flight and different for the return! Just try to check the signs and if in doubt take it out. However, I try to get one of us through before the trays so someone is keeping an eye on everything all the time
