I have the worst sore throat

Never known anything like it. Not much other symptoms - no fever, no aches and pains or general ill feeling. Just a throat like swallowing knives qand a bit of a cough. The pain is so awful it's radiating into my ears. It looks red but not ulcerated. I've no voice at all. Haven't been to docs because today is only day 3 and Google suggests it's likely to be viral and will get better. Posting in chat not health because I'm having a pitiful moan rather than asking for advice. Ow!

I had this a month ago it was agony. Felt like my throat was actually burning- I could barely swallow. I saw a massive improvement after the 3rd day. But nothing helped for the pain at all.

Difflam spray is absolutely brilliant for a sore throat.

Many sympathies, I had tonsillitis a couple of times a few years ago and it's awful

You poor thing. I’ve had some nasty throat things in the past and it can be agony.

Agree probably not worth struggling out to the Gp (they won’t see you until it has been longer in my experience) and it probably doesn’t warrant antibiotics.

I found Solpadeine plus is good. Also:

Try those numbing throat sprays and in between sip hot water or hot honey &lemon suck cloves or Fisherman’s friends. You need to have a flask and just keep chugging the hot water.

Put a hot water bottle near your neck, wrap a scarf round your neck even if you don’t think you feel cold.

Don’t try to sleep lying flat. Prop yourself up - it will help glands to drain. Make sure you have supply of pills and flask of hot water at your bedside.

Don’t go outside unless you are wrapped up in many layers - cover your mouth so only warmed air gets past.

A warm bath as long as you stay warm afterwards may also help.

i hope it improves quickly.

Sympathies as I had something similar about six weeks ago. The only thing that really helped with the pain was hourly gargling with warm salt water together with alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen. Think it lasted about a week!

I've got some Betadine gargle which is good. Also did salt water yesterday. Alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen. I really hoped I'd be over the worst by today. Am feeling very glum that it's not shifting.

A bath is a good idea. Hadn't thought of that.

Gargle with soluble aspirin…

Gem359 · 19/12/2024 18:31

I had this the first time I had Covid. Strepsils saved my life!

Ozgirl75 · 19/12/2024 18:36

My Covid symptom is the worst sore throat - never have any other symptoms. I’ve had it twice now and I find alternating between betadine gargle and difflam spray (the numbing one) and some neurofen keeps it just about bearable.

DH and DD both had similar. Took DH 1 days to feel better.

4pmfireworks · 19/12/2024 21:31

I am wondering if it's Covid. Could be. But I've had it a couple of times before and my main symptom was Hit By A Train and fever and headache. None of that this time - just this bastarding miserable throat.
