Bank can't block payment from company?

I signed up for a free trial of something stupidly months ago and couldn't get it to work so have never, ever used the service

I have autism & ADHD and just completely forgot about it
I know that is my fault
But I'm on disability benefits and don't get paid till 24th Dec so every penny counts right now before Xmas.

Thry tried to take out £39.99 but it was flagged by fraud and was automatically declined.

Bank have lifted the hold on my card but are saying I need to contact the company, who have no phone number/email, only a contact form which I've filled in and they said they will get back to me within 5 working days

But it also says they can attempt to take payment again at any time

Is there not any way for the bank to stop this?

Thwy would be taking a big chunk of the money I need to last till next week

Cancel your card and get a new one . Unless it’s by direct debit? If so you can cancel the direct debit

Whyherewego · 18/12/2024 08:40

Can you block your card ? Some banks allow you to block it temporarily and then you live off cash for the next week or so?

HollopingHooligans · 18/12/2024 08:42

In your banking app you might be able to cancel the subscription yourself.

Assume it is a Continuous Payment Authority which needs cancelling with the company www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/businesses/complaints-deal/banking-and-payments/continuous-payment-authorities , but card provider should help. Can you go into a branch of the bank?

PleaseGoToSleeep · 18/12/2024 08:44

Maybe not for this case specifically, but if you sign up for some free trials on iPhone you can manage the subscription through your phone settings.

PonyMcBony · 18/12/2024 08:45

Who was it? Can we help find details? Have you asked the bank what happens if you cancel that card and get a new one? Or is it via dd?

Hesonlyakidharry · 18/12/2024 08:47

As you didn’t cancel during the free trial period then you’re going to have to make that payment at some point, but you can cancel going forward.

What is it and how did you sign up?

If you want to avoid paying it until after Christmas then you’ll need to move your money into a different account and just use that one or withdraw all your money in cash. The payment will then keep being declined. You’ll eventually have to have money in your account and they’ll take the payment, but it should only be once if you don’t forget to cancel it again.

Chrbb · 18/12/2024 09:14

Ah yes I can stop my card from working on the app
So I will do that until I've spoke to them.

I would cancel the card but it's just before Christmas and I wouldn't get a new one and I have online shops pending

I'll just freeze it then unfreeze it as I need it

Hopefully the company will be understanding

Unfortunately, cancelling or changing the card doesn’t stop the continuous card payment

having the same issue myself and my bank has been equally useless so I’m changing bank.

not a quick fix but a permanent one

Dragonfly97 · 18/12/2024 09:50

I had this problem a few years back; I think the bank are obliged to cancel a payment if you ask them to, especially if it's fraudulent, I had to get stroppy with my bank but they sorted it in the end.

The company emailed back and said they've closed the account and won't take any payments.
Very kind of them
