i fairly regularly have to drive Bristol to West Cornwall and back with my DD 12 months - would love some recommendations of places to stop for a couple of hours midway ish as that is currently what seems to work best. Somewhere we can have lunch and a walk or play?

Belstone is good on a nice day (not now!!). It's just off the road and on the edge of Dartmoor. There's a pub and a large expanse of grass to play on if you bring a picnic.

Belstone is lovely, and we like Strawberry Fields farm shop

Agree that Belstone is lovely. Arguably, one of my favourite places in the south west.

We tend to stop in Okehampton (firstly, because my sister lives there, and secondly because it’s not too far off course). Usually have a quick meal at Spoons. There’s 3 supermarkets and a park (Simmons) so will sometimes grab some picnic food and sit in the park for a bit so the dog and children can let off some steam.
