I unashamedly love this song.
My DCs rib me for it but they do the backing vocals for me join in!

This is my Christmas song and the video is just 👌

80s Nostalgia <siiiiighs>

Loved every minute and may have had a leaky eye moment or 2 watching it….

HÆLTHEPAIN · 14/12/2024 22:27

I haven’t watched it yet but I can’t wait. It’s (unashamedly) my favourite Christmas song ever.

I imagine I will have leaky eyes watching it too.

what a lovely programme 🩷
too tired to watch the George one tonight so I’m sky passing for tomorrow!

Middlemarch123 · 14/12/2024 23:02

I love watching George, feel so blessed that I got to see him in concert. Always bittersweet watching him now though, bless his beautiful soul.

Taytocrisps · 14/12/2024 23:38

I watched it. It took me right back. I was 12 that year and in my first year at secondary school. I loved both 'Last Christmas' and 'Do they know it's Christmas'. I was a massive Whammie - my best friend and I used to argue about who was more gorgeous - George or Andrew. I was crazy about George. I was delighted that he topped the charts - No. 1 (with DTKIC) and No. 2. I got the single 'Do they know it's Christmas' and a bootleg cassette of Wham! performing in Dublin as Christmas presents that year. A friend later borrowed my cassette (to record it for herself) and it got jammed in her cassette player Sad.

I've read Andrew Ridgely's book, so I knew they'd invited friends to Switzerland, to film the video. Sounds like they had a lot of fun. The clothes, hair and jewellery are so '80s Smile. Pure nostalgia! So sad that George is no longer around - I'd love to hear his views on it all. And he would have been so happy that it made No. 1. Although I guess that wouldn't have happened if he hadn't died. I thought the image of him on that monument in Switzerland looked more like Morten Harket! I'd totally forgotten that they'd donated the profits from 'Last Christmas' to Band Aid. It must be so hard for Andrew, Shirley and Pepsi to hear the song and watch the video.

Anyway, the song is great and I never get tired of it. Even after 40 years.

I missed the programme about 'Do they know it's Christmas'.

I hope it's still there when you get to visit @Longma
Could you manage a January or February visit? It must be so magical, you'll feel like you're in the video!😅

@Taytocrisps Those are my exact memories. What a year eh! I do think we were spoilt with great music back then.

I missed the Do They Know it's Christmas program too, might have to look it up on Iplayer. Is that an option for you?

I'm not that fussed on the song, but it's a lovely documentary. And I shed a tear or two when they talked about George at the end.

Tabitha500 · 15/12/2024 11:46

This is my all time favourite Christmas song too, never get fed up of hearing it! I heard 3 times in one day last week and still love it!

However, OH is not so keen and I have to put up with his eye rolling!

MaidOfSteel · 15/12/2024 12:20

I'm watching it now on the iPlayer. What a talented, generous, loving and very special man George was. He brought so much happiness to the world, didn't he.

Taytocrisps · 15/12/2024 13:12

I forgot to say that Shirlie and Pepsi look fab. How cool is Shirlie - I mean, she dated two of the biggest pop stars of the '80s and subsequently married one of them.

I was amused to discover that George had his hood up in some of the scenes because he was having a bad hair day Grin.

@NowNumber5 unfortunately, I can't access the iPlayer here.

NowNumber5 · 15/12/2024 13:34

@MaidOfSteel oh yes, he really was.
It's so poignantly sad he actually died on Christmas day when they've all said he loved Christmas so much 😭

@Taytocrisps I know right! They both look fab but Shirlie really got the golden ticket. There was another program following the Last Christmas one where Shirlie's son Roman was reading a speech (to the strains of LC being played during a service in front of Kate, William and kids) where he said something like Not only was George a mega popstar but he was also his godfather!
Amazing how tight their friendship group was, and just how much they obviously love and missed him 💔

I'm just watching this now. Still think Shirley's first child is actually Andrew's.

the80sweregreat · 16/12/2024 20:14

I miss George Michael being around and was amused by them both being interviewed on chat shows and just being themselves and cheeky ! Which didn't go down well at times lol
He was so talented
Pepsi was always my favorite backing singer . She seems really sweet

She certainly is the spit of him! 😮
