Decorate cupcakes for birthday party

Hello!

Son is having a Sonic themed birthday party, I'm thinking individual cupcakes for each child will be easier as they can either eat after the party food or pop in a box to take home.

I was going to buy supermarket cupcakes, decorate with icing/buttercream with a nozzle and stick one of those rice paper pictures on the top of the character. Maybe add some gold sprinkles.

Is this a naff idea??!!! Supermarkets haven't got Sonic themed cakes otherwise I'd have bought one of those! Or should I just order from someone local (seem quite expensive though)

How old are the children?

It sounds perfectly reasonable if you can get the ricepaper toppers? I've ordered cupcakes for DS's birthday before from a now-unfortunately defunct local bakery, and they were excellent. (DS and his friends were 9/10 year old newshounds, so we had Bernie Sanders cupcakes one year.😀

Children aged around 7.

Thank you for the toppers recommendation!

Asda sell blue frosting which looks perfect for piping. I've never actually piped before though 🙈

Don't even bother piping, just slap it on with a knife if you're putting toppers on

I did similar for my daughter's birthday - I didn't have time to bake, or have the funds to pay someone else to do it. I did pipe, but I had sprinkles to put on.

I quite frequently do those rice papers on top of melted chocolate or plain icing. No need for piping.. These were plain icing with a few sprinkles.
