Suggestions to help 11 year old get to sleep earlier

Hello! 11 year old has always struggled to get to sleep early. He seems to get a second wind at about 9pm and jumps around dancing etc! Even if I put him to bed at 9pm he will just lie awake until around 11.30pm. I try to ask him to do reading, then he will put on an audiobook (which often he lies around listening to rather than sending him to sleep - I do try other methods as well (sleep hypnosis) and turning it off. He only really settles if i lie with him for a bit which obviously is not ideal at 11 years old! I do allow TV in evenings; as a single parent I need a bit of peace and quiet so to ban it completely wouldn't work.

He has to get up super early for school so is always overtired.

Just wondered if anyone has a similar problem and any tips!

I have struggled with poor sleep for years so my suggestions are:

  • try to get him to do exercise earlier in the evening e.g. dancing, joe wicks, etc.
  • think about what he is eating and drinking e.g. hidden caffeine.
  • stop TV and tablets, Xbox etc. at least an hour before bed.
  • build a sleep routine e.g. bath, reading, bed.
I personally find Headspace sleep casts helpful.
