Cam you do a handstand?

Ds is trying, he's 7. I'd love to demonstrate but probably haven't done one for over 30 years I'm 47 and too fat.

Can you do one? Would you try?

Yes bur against a wall now rather then free stand 38 years old.

Ginkypig · 09/12/2024 19:01

Even as a child’s I could only do a headstand against a wall not even a handstand!

I could do multiple cartwheels though.

don’t know if I’d even attempt it now as I’m disabled.

BobbyBiscuits · 09/12/2024 19:30

I used to do them all the time, but it took loads of practice. My dad used to blige my holding up my legs, until I could hold them up alone! That was years ago.

BobbyBiscuits · 09/12/2024 19:53

Sorry, oblige by holding up my legs...🤣

NerdyBird · 09/12/2024 21:00

I'm the same age as you OP. I can, to my surprise, still do a handstand. I did do gym as a child though, and can also do cartwheels, round off, splits and bridge. Not as easily as I used to mind!

Handstands definitely improve with practice, so if your DS keeps trying he'll get there I'm sure.

OneOfEachAnimal · 10/12/2024 11:42

Yes I can. If you’re not very fit/flexible, then I wouldn’t recommend trying OP, unless you wouldn’t mind an injury to get out of visiting any relatives over Xmas. 😂

NowNumber5 · 10/12/2024 11:50

Possibly. But it may be the last thing I ever do... so if I don't come back to this thread 😉

HotCrossBunplease · 10/12/2024 11:54

I tried a cartwheel when I was about 45, just assumed I’d still be able to do it was was excellent at them most of my younger years. Like riding a bike. It was on a mat at a free play gym thing for kids.

Turns out it is a skill you can lose. Really strained my wrists and made me very dizzy!
I would like to try a round off on an air track though, reckon I might just about pull it off (51 now).

WalterdelaMare · 10/12/2024 11:55

Yes, but only in the summer in the garden (low ceilings).

fussychica · 10/12/2024 12:12

No and at 67 I won't be trying. I've never been able to do handstands, cartwheels etc. My limit is a forward roll!

Fireworknight · 10/12/2024 12:14

Nope, but never could as a child.

RabbitsEatPancakes · 10/12/2024 12:42

I just tried. I can kick up into one but then I fall straight back down, I'm 8 months pregnant though so hopefully will be able to hold it again once baby's out and I've got better balance again.

I can hold it on a wall but I'd assume everyone can do that!

Cartwheel still very easy, did 4 in a row the other day, trying to teach my DS.

BibbityBobbityToo · 10/12/2024 12:45

No, last time I tried at the gym, one of my hands slipped on the floor and I crashed down on my shoulder. The thought I could have crashed down on my head and damaged my spine, has put me off forever!

BraveBlueDuck · 09/12/2024 08:08

I'll give it a go and let you know

I think I broke my hip

minipie · 10/12/2024 18:22

I’m wondering how many injuries there are as a result of this thread…

Hope you’re ok BraveBlueDuck

Allnewtometoo · 11/12/2024 08:11

Ooh no I hope not! I'm going to aim for it but certainly won't be trying just yet.

Never managed, can't do a cartwheel either - Life has otherwise been a success.
Hope your son is able to not worry about it either.

Made me lol

TheBuffetInspector · 03/04/2025 10:03

Thevelvelletes · 08/12/2024 20:42

Snap and if tried now well that would be guaranteed trip to AE like the NHS haven't enough to be doing.

Same here!

"How did you manage to break both wrists and give yourself concussion buffet?"

I feel like I should write - "Well Officer" 😂

@Allnewtometoo is your son a good swimmer? They're quite easy to do in a pool. Or they were, haven't tried for a few years!

Girasoli · 03/04/2025 12:27

Yes, am 37.

Spent my childhood/teens doing gymnastics...handy for showing off to my DC at the playground.

Buttonknot · 03/04/2025 12:31

Not freestanding, but I can do a cartwheel, or a handstand against a wall. I'm 50.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/04/2025 12:45

I can do a headstand against a wall then balance off it. Not so sure about a handstand. I could do them against the wall as a child.

Never done a cartwheel. I think I lack the hip flexibility to help get my hands down to the side, let alone any momentum to kick up from there.

Zippityjumpingbean · 03/04/2025 12:57

I can do one in the swimming pool, does that count?

thismummydrinksgin · 03/04/2025 12:59

No and neither could my kids, I convinced myself I’d passed on faulted genes and we were just too heavy. Fast forward to my daughter who is 13 becoming determined to do one, I think she watched videos etc and practiced relentlessly and she can really do them now! I’m so impressed, tempted to try myself but I am also fat and old so not sure I’ll get there …

JohnTheRevelator · 03/04/2025 17:40

I'm laughing inwardly at the thought of me trying to do a handstand. I can't even walk properly! I must admit though that my friends and I did seem to spend an inordinate amount of time at at primary school doing handstands.
