Is this a 111 call or A&E? Or neither

3yo hit her face on a plastic table. Bleeding out of both nostrils. I’ve pinched her nose for 10 mins and there is still some blood coming out. She’s complaining the front of her neck hurts.

im currently pinching for another 10 mins.. what would you do next if it’s still bleeding? Any experiences?

I would go to an and e as it’s an injury-induced nose bleed. (And it may worth getting a scan done).

Ring 111

Haggisfish3 · 08/12/2024 17:49

A and e as both nostrils is unusual.

V unlikely to scan a child that age/mechanism as its mental a dose of radiation for a minor injury. Get it checked if doesn't stop, may need cauterising

HPandthelastwish · 08/12/2024 17:59

NHS says A&E if it follows a blow to the head or lasts longer than 15 minutes - however as it's stopped I'd ring 111 and see what they say, the fact it's stopped probably means she's fine

CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets · 08/12/2024 17:59

If its stopped call 111 for advice.

However if she hit her face so hard she made her nose bleed out of both nostrils I'd want a concussion check and a ct scan.

Poppins2016 · 08/12/2024 18:01

Definitely worth a concussion check/check for broken nose... it sounds like quite a blow, poor little one.

Wheelyfast · 08/12/2024 18:02

111 but they will probably say to go to hospital (I think there is a rule for under 5s as they don't always have the language skills to convey pain)
I'm sure that's what my sil said regarding age , but could be wrong .
You can access 111 online too I think

Cupofteaandbiscuits · 08/12/2024 18:14

I’d probably call 111 although will probably send you to hospital anyway. Good luck x

CandyMaker · 08/12/2024 18:19

Truthfully, I would do nothing. I see this as a minor injury. But if you are concerned ring 111. I certainly would not be dragging her down to A and E to wait for hours unless 111 thought it was necessary.
The veins in children's nostrils are delicate which means they bleed more easily. I am assuming she can move her neck normally. Totally different if she can't.

A&E

We don't ct small children unless things like hit by cars/falls down multiple flights of stairs etc (and even then we often actually prefer to keep them in and closely monitor for 24h than scan them).

Ct is huge dose radiation and not good for a growing brain/possible long term cancer risk

Wheelyfast · 08/12/2024 20:36

Hope your all sorted now, just came to look for an update @Trainors

Trainors · 08/12/2024 23:07

Thank you for all the advice and sorry for not updating sooner. We didn’t phone 111 or go to A&E in the end. She stopped bleeding and was absolutely fine. I think the neck issue was just because I was making her lean forwards as that disappeared quickly. Her language skills are very good so I was fairly confident she had no pain that I wouldn’t know about. I was there for the fall and it was her nose that sort of caught the table on the way down and I caught her before she hit the floor so I’m not worried about any concussion. There were lots of extra cuddles and stories at bedtime and I have allowed a sleepover in my bed so I can keep an eye overnight.

I’m sorry for wasting the time of you kind people. I posted because when it didn’t stop bleeding after pinching for the first 10 minutes I knew that in the next 10 minutes I had to get a plan clear in my head in the event that it was still bleeding.

Actively bleeding small ppl are scary, It makes your brain do weird things! Like you don't trust your own decisions. Glad she's ok

Haggisfish3 · 09/12/2024 00:07

Don’t apologise. Glad all is well. 🙂
