What a storm over the last 24 hours! Anyone had much major damage to their property?

just the fence in back garden is damaged but I feel like we’ve had a bit of a lucky escape compared to others nearby - we live near the sea! Other houses / businesses have had roof damage, windows blow out and debris damage! Power cables came down in one street!

@travellinglighter , amazing sentiment. I think energy companies do get a lot of flack, I save my negativity for the fat cats, not for people like you working hard on the front line. Be proud of your work/work ethic, be safe.👏

Live in South wales, by the sea. Our garden completely destroyed, fence all broken. Most of our street have had damage too (we live in an exposed area) with fence casualties, broken roofs, broken sheds. Was still very windy yesterday so not much has been cleaned up so hopefully will be today

PowerRangersAuntie · 08/12/2024 07:51

Santa is face down in the mud in my neighbour's garden 😔 My friend has a large tree down but fortunately it landed safely. We tied things down/put them away but a few plastic bags have blown in.

PowerRangersAuntie · 08/12/2024 07:54

Sympathy to anybody who did not get off so lightly. Thank you to you and your colleagues @travellinglighter I hope you all stay safe!

I was very gung ho about the wind (we're in Cornwall, there's mass hysteria if we get 2 flakes of snow but 70mph winds are just a normal day really), so off we went to get our Christmas tree as planned.

However, finding the main road closed in 2 places (1 was for power lines down, I think the other was for a small tree down) and, on our detour, seeing a house with a massive tree fallen on it did prove quite sobering.

Oof, where was that to? I haven’t been out yet but am off to St Ives today and expecting a lot of debris on the roads.

No significant damage here that I’m aware of but I’m relatively sheltered from northerlies.

Worcestershire here. Lots of trees down locally, closing some main roads. We personally seem to be ok but daughter's garden fence has gone, leaving her garden exposed to the whole street, and my sister's shed has been destroyed. She doesn't know where the roof is - and it's a big shed 15x12 ft!

The A39 between Falmouth and Truro. But it's all open again now, thanks to travellinglighter or her counterparts 🙏

Was just reading the Falmouth Packet, looked a bit of a mess around there. Didn't go out fortunately yesterday, so Truro wasn't on our radar.

Damage here, half our front fence blew down, so that's been recovered and some of it still useable. Wind was so strong it broke three fence posts and they were big buggers as well.

Tree in the side garden has lost some branches and watching it early this morning, surprised it didn't blow down, it's now unstable, so it's going to have to go. Another good storm will probably see that down.

Couple of fences for neighbours have gone as well. Seems to finally be easing here now, but it's been pretty wild down here.

lorn195 · 08/12/2024 10:03

@crackofdoom that's good to hear as I had read seen the photos. Glad no one was seriously hurt.

yehisaidit · 08/12/2024 10:16

Fence down 😕

AuntieDolly · 08/12/2024 10:41

Our plane couldn't land at Gatwick, despite trying once. Spent the night in Amsterdam

Zippedydodah · 08/12/2024 10:46

We’ve avoided any damage here (northeast of Bath), a few houses have fence panels down and bins have blown over . A number of trees were brought down around the village, blocking roads but amazing local tree surgeons have done a fabulous job clearing everything.
I am surprised we didn’t have power cuts, they’re a regular feature of living here😊

Did they put you up in a hotel?

Doyouthinktheyknow · 08/12/2024 12:14

2 fence panels down, more to follow probably.

And the cat hid from me after I opened the back door to look at the garden and she got a blast of the wind🤣🤣 She seems to think it’s my fault it’s windy and she can’t go out🤣🤣

Shezlong · 08/12/2024 12:19

Lots of trees down locally, we lost a couple of big branches but no full trees. 30 hours in to a power cut though which has been pretty miserable! Apparently should be back on this afternoon but they said that yesterday too. Weirdly we're one of only 3 houses around who are still without power, everyone else back on.

Norman the gnome is on his back. 😥

It's a sad sad day for Norman the Gnome 🥺

Allmarbleslost · 07/12/2024 23:06

There's a lot of crashing and banging outside but I've decided to have a wine or three and make it tomorrows problem.

Could the crashing and banging be wine related 🤔

AuntieDolly · 08/12/2024 13:04

@crackofdoom yes. Just landed now

TickingAlongNicely · 08/12/2024 13:13

We had a death locally. It was easy to be glib about the trampoline moving a few inches (its now weighted down).

Is Norma anywhere close?

Swissrollover · 08/12/2024 13:30

In the Red Alert area, so far, only 1 fence post has gone - still about 4 hours of storm left to go. We tend to lose at least one post every storm.

I was pleased that I saved my new parcel box this time. Despite containing bricks, previous ones have blown over and around and broken the lid hinges. I threaded a small padlock through the little clasp which kept the new box lid shut this time and we attached the box to a heavy base.

@travellinglighter That's fascinating! In my rural Somerset village, we had at least 5 very short power cuts - 30 seconds or less. Does this tend to happen when restoring power elsewhere or for another reason?

We've been very lucky to not have longer power losses, so I'm not complaining, but curious as it can't be good for our sensitive electricals like routers, PS5, gaming computers, etc, which were running at the time. (I might need to invest in more surge protectors, if this is recommended.)

HelpMeGetThrough · 08/12/2024 13:40

In the Red Alert area

I bet that was "interesting".

We were in amber and it was gusting up to 80+ mph at times, that was bad enough.

Went to a "pleasant" breeze of 70 over night.

HisMajestysSecretCervix · 08/12/2024 13:41

No damage at all so that was the good news for us

Power cut for 32 hours (it came back on an hour ago) so that was the bad news

caringcarer · 08/12/2024 13:48

My DD was visiting me this weekend and their neighbour text to tell them the top ridge off their roof blew off and a few roof tiles into their garden. They are going back today to hunt out their home insurance but are not sure if they will be able to claim. It's also been raining hard where they live and they fear rain will have got in.

Shezlong · 09/12/2024 14:09

We're still without power, about 55 hours now. Have given up on being able to salvage any of the freezer food so will bin it all when I get back from work later. Probably not worth claiming on insurance once the excess is taken into account.
