Would you drive to Devon from London today?

Just that really. We're meant to be going to visit family who we're not seeing at Christmas for early "Christmas" with dinner and presents etc today. I'm really nervous to be driving on the motorway in this weather. We're only in a yellow warning area though so I'm not sure if I'm just being ridiculous. WWYD?
There will be quite a bit of pressure to go. Family have bought the food. Kids want to do presents and otherwise we won't have a "Christmas" with them this year.
I just keep imagining driving past lorries on exposed bits of motorway and it's slightly terrifying.

I drive and work outdoors in yellow warnings all the time. If the roads were open, I'd carry on as normal. Amber would be different and there's no way I'd go anywhere in Red.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/12/2024 07:19

Well we are in the red zone till late morning.

TheaBrandt · 07/12/2024 07:20

I wouldn’t. Not worth it. But have personally experienced death of a child due to high wind (happened on my street I arrived when the police were dealing with the aftermath the police were visibly upset) so despite being usually gung ho I’m not about wind.

I wouldn’t. It will be chaos all day with trees down everywhere and power cuts.

LadyMargaretPoledancer · 07/12/2024 07:28

Which part of Devon?

I live in Devon and there's no way I'd go outside. Its very bad down here at the moment.

I think it would be very irresponsible to risk your kids lives just to avoid some so-called family members being a bit miffed.

Don't do it.

Shwish · 07/12/2024 07:32

North Devon. Yes that's exactly my feeling but I just don't know whether I'm being a drama queen. It FEELS like it's a nuts idea but that's partly because I am always a bit nervous with motorway driving anyway.

North Devon is amber and red. Don't do it. The emergency services will be busy.
It's bad enough in Hampshire and we're only yellow.

Definitely don't drive to North Devon today.

Don't be wishy-washy and second guess yourself with multiple excuses. Just think you must put your kids lives first. End of.

Plus it's also selfish to add to the chaos on the roads, we don't need people unnecessary clogging up the roads when emergency vehicles need to get to vulnerable people.

FreshLaundry · 07/12/2024 07:37

A long journey into amber or red areas? No way. You're also putting others at risk ultimately.

justasking111 · 07/12/2024 07:38

Don't be part of the problem today

ChessieFL · 07/12/2024 07:38

I live near the M5 in Somerset and it’s very windy here. I wouldn’t be going anywhere near the motorway in this weather.

TheaBrandt · 07/12/2024 07:40

Sorry but if something happened you would never forgive yourself. And people would think it was your fault for ignoring warnings. Which it would be.

Shwish · 07/12/2024 07:41

The bit we're meant to be going to is Yellow not Amber but yeah still feels scary.

I’m supposed to drive Bristol to North Devon today and there is no chance. Bristol is in the red zone and you’d have to come through here on the motorways.

MindBodySoul · 07/12/2024 07:43

The whole of Devon and Cornwall is on at least an amber warning for wind... Red in north Devon .. I'm mid Devon and won't be going out today 🍃

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 07/12/2024 07:45

I would just say to family very firmly due the severe weather not safe for you and your children to travel- you may drive through red/ amber areas in the motorway not worth it, your family should postpone sensible thing to do I wouldn’t expect my family to drive through a storm x

MiddleClassWomanOfACertainAge · 07/12/2024 07:45

Move the gathering to another date. The point is to see your family, does it matter whether it's before or after 25 December?

Berga · 07/12/2024 07:48

The whole of Devon is in Amber for wind today. It's very very windy. We had the alert on our phones for red. As it's weather, it won't be an exact science so you might find yourself in an unexpected situation. We won't be going out today and have cancelled seeing family. Just stay home. It's disappointing, but better than being in an accident or worse.

Shwish · 07/12/2024 08:09

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. We've decided to reschedule till after Christmas
