Waterstones have some with very glorious hardcovers. But I like Mnemosyne notebooks because of the general quality of the paper and binding etc. Also, as a leftie, I value their spiral bindings that allow the pages to lie properly flat. I'm not sure if this is an issue for righties, too, but many diaries don't open well and lie flat which makes it extremely hard to write nicely in them.

Actually, though, there is a case for buying quite humble and imperfect journals. When starting a diary I have a horrible tendency to be a bit perfectionist . All the words I add and all the words I fail to add seem to sully the beautiful blankness at the start. Some crappy notebook from Tesco might be a way to coax myself over that stumbling block.

Another way to get past it is to begin the diary somewhere in the middle of the book. That way, by the time you come back around to the first page you are an old hand, and can write an opening page that is more worthy!
