If you have no breakdown cover, what do you do if you do breakdown?

Hadn't really occurred to me before, but despite the plethora of breakdown cover providers (who I gather all pool together to send out a convenient local driver), what would you do if you'd forgotten to renew, say, and you broke down somewhere?

I paid a garage to tow my car in. £20.

I've been driving for 30 years so have saved a lot by never paying for breakdown cover.

Having been stuck on the side of a motorway, I was glad I could call the AA and get recovered.

Being stuck on the side of a motorway is a really horrible place to be, no matter how safe you are.
