Potential bomb poss found in Gatwick airport

Gatwick south terminal on the news has been shut now for hours since after 10.
No one knows when it will be opened mo answers as of yet
Apparently poor people are waiting in the cold outside they have been given foil type blankets to keep warm etc
No trains going there so folks stuck at nearest train station before Gatwick.
North terminal still working but absolutely packed as flights are going from there and some flights from the south have been relocated to there.
Anyone due to fly today from there today?

Gatwick Airport evacuates 'large part' of South Terminal due to 'security incident'

Sussex Police said a bomb disposal team had been sent in "as a precaution" and warned of significant disruption.

My friend flew out at 8.30 this morning, just missed it. She's not landed yet so unaware of the hullabaloo

Good as just seen folks are freezing outside

Advice is to check with your airline before attempting to travel

The north terminal isn’t directly affected, apparently, except that they’re trying to get passengers off planes that would have gone in to south, and of course that’s adding to delays.

And it’s really hard to either arrive at or leave the airport at all, as trains aren’t stopping, buses have been suspended and minicabs/ubers from nearby stations are completely swamped (and according to one report, charging silly prices)

No word at all on how long incident might last, so no way to predict size/duration of backlog of delayed flights

Beeb says that temperature is 6C, feels like 2C; and that staff have been handing out foil blankets as well as water. That’s one good strand of contingency planning.

But as shelagh fogarty is saying nothing much coming out as info. And there are those stuck outside in the cold

Presumably specialist police/military are dealing with whatever the suspicious item is, and they can’t be hurried, nor will they want to give out info before they’re sure

Which is easy to understand if you’re checking in on the news from your own unaffected home/workplace, but difficult to deal with on the spot.

(If I knew I was going to be stuck for say (at random) 6 hours, I’d cope with that much better than just waiting and not knowing)

It is reopening now, North terminal flights were not affected.

vegaspotty · 22/11/2024 14:57

Feel sorry for all involved today and wondering how long the flights will take to get vack to normal.
Son running in San Sebastian Marathon on Sunday and we are due to fly out from South Terminal tomorrow morning.
Am guessing crews and planes will all be in the wrong place 🤔
Still nothing we can do about it apart from wait and see.

A suspicious item at Buchanan Street Bus Station in Glasgow on Wednesday afternoon resulted in the area being closed for several hours. Even after the package was destroyed, it was 5-6 hours before it was confirmed not a danger to the public and people allowed back in. These things take time to deal with.

Hopefully not that many, certainly not by tomorrow AM.

If the terminal really is opening up now then there’s probably enough time for most airlines to get most crews and aircraft back where they should be later today….that unfortunately probably/possibly doesn’t mean not everybody who was planning to fly today will actually do so.

Good luck

Local reports suggest there was a banned item located in a suitcase.
