What's the latest time you would feel safe being out alone?

What is the latest time you would feel safe being out alone (without a dog)?

I live in a small ish town which is pretty quiet after 8pm when the local supermarket shuts. A woman was allegedly attacked a few weeks ago at around that time, and since then I've felt uneasy walking in the dark (which is quite early at this time of year), even in built up areas.

On an ideal world it wouldn't be like this but...

Until dark, so about 4pm this time of year

TheLizardQueen · 18/11/2024 19:10

Until it’s dark. I don’t walk anywhere alone in the dark and I live in a safe little village

CantBelieveNaive · 18/11/2024 19:10

Yes until it was going dark then I would be straight home.
And yes it shouldn't be like this... 😘

Imnotarestaurant · 18/11/2024 19:11

Midnight-ish. But I’d walk out after that if I needed to.

skinnyoptionsonly · 18/11/2024 19:12

Kindly and not looking for a fight!

How do you manage to function in life if you can't be alone outside after 4pm 3 months of the year ?!

As a single working parent I cannot imagine this.

I'd prefer not to and I pick my areas but I don't get a choice really.

Cotswoldmama · 18/11/2024 19:14

It's hard to say, I think when it's dark I would always text when I'm leaving somewhere and on my way home after about 7. I think I feel safe enough to walk home alone at any time as long as I've text my husband and he knows I'm on my way home and to expect me in 10 mins (which I guess in its self means I don't feel safe!) we live just on the edge if the town centre of a small town.

Dontopenthetrapdoor · 18/11/2024 19:14

I would happily go out at any time of night and often feel safer at night than I do in some daytime situations. My level of comfort depends on the people and atmosphere around me rather than day or night time. There is no truly safe situation or time of day.

Tophelleborine · 18/11/2024 19:15

No time limit. I live rurally now, but never thought about this when I lived in cities (I'd avoid certain areas). As PP have said, I can't imagine how I'd function if I didn't go out after dark.

augustinmeaulnes · 18/11/2024 19:17

I wouldn't let fear stop me doing what I want to do but ramp up my risk assessment as required, day or night.

GreenSmithing · 18/11/2024 19:17

I agree, I live in a city and it's less about the time and more about the area.

Burntout101 · 18/11/2024 19:17

Any time depending on the place

Scutterbug · 18/11/2024 19:17

I sometimes go for a walk at midnight when the street lights switch off. It’s the only time I ever leave the house.

doodleschnoodle · 18/11/2024 19:17

8-9pm is latest I tend to walk the dog, sometimes as late as 10. But I'm in a village and I stick to the streets for night walks, not the forest. It's dark here early in the north so Scotland so I still need to walk to shop etc after dark sometimes too and to local events.

BrieHugger · 18/11/2024 19:18

After the pubs have shut and there’s nobody around. As long as it’s well lit and I can see a few other people I’m not worried.

mnahmnah · 18/11/2024 19:19

Well I walked home a couple of weeks ago from a friends house at 1am. About 20 minute walk. Nice suburb of a medium city. Nobody around at all. I did feel a bit uncomfortable!

Pickingmyselfup · 18/11/2024 19:20

Somewhere between 10pm and midnight unless it's off road.

I won't go along the canal/river in the dark at all just incase there are weirdos of any sex lurking around but it's also sensible since it's not lit and likely to end with me falling in!

I go out running along the main road/housing estates near me when it's early and dark and I would walk to and from work/gym/shop/pub all of which are accessible from the road.

In a large group I can't think of anywhere that I would avoid (unlit areas aside unless we had several torches)

My life would be incredibly isolated if I never went anywhere alone after dark and as a grown adult I can't see how it's feasible at all.

EvilsElsasPetSnowman · 18/11/2024 19:20

I wouldn’t feel safe as soon as it goes dark

BoobyDazzler · 18/11/2024 19:21

Always.

You never go out in daylight?

MiddleAgedDread · 18/11/2024 19:22

Major city and wouldn’t think twice about getting the last bus home at 11:30pm or so.

SouthLondonMum22 · 18/11/2024 19:22

No time limit. Definitely not as early as 4pm, I refuse to live like that.

RisingSunn · 18/11/2024 19:23

10:30pm

Ketzele · 18/11/2024 19:23

I think all women make up little rules about what is safe and what isn't, to allow ourselves to operate in the outside world. Not sure they're very grounded in reality, but yes I do it too. Though there's nothing magic about sunlight to keep you safe - street crime is usually higher in the summer.

Voltefarce · 18/11/2024 19:24

No time limit really. 2am, 3am if I have an event. Although I generally like to be tucked up in bed well
before then.

Vettrianofan · 18/11/2024 19:24

Only in daylight hours. I don't walk alone in the dark.
