Where to go to holiday - europe

We want a family holiday in the sun next summer - late june / early july. In the family is a husband (beer), 13-year old (like swimming, but generally easy going) and me - fussiest.

My priorities are (not in order): Sun, beautiful scenery, beach/lake, history, cheap.

We loved majorca for a previous holiday abroad. But can't afford that this year. In fact the budget has come down to about £2000 (would love less) including flights.

So far, croatia and Bulgaria are top of my list. But also Albania and Lithuania.

Croatia has all the things that I want. But can we go somewhere cheaper? Do you have any recommendations for Bulgaria or Albania? Or another country?

What does beer mean? He likes to go somewhere with beer?

Is your budget for one or two weeks?

you could also consider Southern Italy eg Sicily or Puglia. Key is to find cheap flights, accommodation can be found cheaply and food too.

We've done Lake Constance (Germany) for around 2k.
That was 1 week self-catering flat in Meersburg.

Only part of your criteria that does not match is the fact that we drove as a car is very useful to get around.

Not sure about costs for flights & car hire.

Italian lakes?

Abstractthinking · 17/11/2024 17:22

Yes, i meant that DH's interest on holiday is beer! Not huge amounts, just generally good quality in the sunshine.

Car hire is no problem. The italian/ German lakes would be great. Is it cheap there?

Depends when you go but Italy has got more expensive.

Peanus · 17/11/2024 17:25

Turkey all inclusive

Italian lakes are expensive, Garda cheaper than Lake Como.
South is cheaper

It's the flights that are crippling. I've been looking at Lake Garda & flights are close to £1k! Just for the flights.

Airport taxi around €60

spend the other £1k on beer and sightseeing in tarragona and barcelona

Croatia is expensive ! As is Italy.

I would look at Crete or mainland Greece

I remember going to greece 20 years ago and it was really expensive.

I have decided on bulgaria now. I should get the flights for about €600 and accomodation for less than €100 a night. I am hoping that food and drink will be cheaper than Western europe.
