Anyone else watching?

Such nostalgia - Take That and East 17! Feel like I’m 14 again!

It's on my 'To Watch" list for the Christmas break.

Really excited about it so glad to see your positive review!
Enjoy!

Eyesopenwideawake · 16/11/2024 21:37

Me - loving it!

Lucky enough to see the original boy band The Monkees at the Hammersmith Oden in 1989 (?) - best concert I've ever been to!

CaveMum · 16/11/2024 21:38

Ah, the “Do What You Like” video.

As Robbie just said, “It WAS fucking odd!”

I’m on the documentary that’s on after the performances.

Bloody hell. Tony Mortimer was the clean living one but Brian Harvey is the one out of E17 that still looks like a teenager

I did uncharitably think that time had not been kind to Tony. Though to be fair it hasn’t been kind to me either!

Ooh. Niche bit of Aphex Twin on the incidental music

CaveMum · 16/11/2024 22:00

Blimey, I didn’t know that “Stay” was written about Tony’s brother who committed suicide.

Tony was the one with talent though.

My memory was of his sister with cancer - I knew it was Tony's tragedy though.

I think Bros did one about their sister dying

CaveMum · 16/11/2024 22:49

Blimey - Damage, I forgot about them!

OP posts:
Lalgarh · 17/11/2024 10:55

Barely registered Damage as was past boy bands then, but pretty telling that Smash Hits had to have them on there but not looking too macho because they felt to be 'too intimidating' (BC were black).

fearfulworrier · 18/11/2024 14:24

Just been watching this and think it’s so sad the damage done to so many lives. Loads of these bands brought me so much joy, many crushes and amazing concerts. It’s crazy to think how unhappy so many of them were behind closed doors.

purpleme12 · 19/11/2024 23:27

I shouldn't laugh but Gary's face when it announced that Morewood School had won! 😂

purpleme12 · 19/11/2024 23:28

He needs to build a band round Gary to give Gary a bit of coolness 😂

purpleme12 · 19/11/2024 23:34

Robbie said 'in the parlance of the time, I would have said he was a bit up himself'

Do people not say that anymore then?!? 😂

purpleme12 · 20/11/2024 00:08

Stay Another Day is really about Tony's brother taking his own life 😓

purpleme12 · 20/11/2024 20:34

Watched the first episode

It's compelling viewing

Inthesnug · 20/11/2024 20:46

Loved this! 90s were my era. I was a huge TF fan. But there's no way the Do What You Like video would be filmed today. Looking back you can tell that the 90s boy bands were managed by older gay men.

Didn’t the video for Promises also feature quite a lot of fetish gear leather?!

@CaveMum certainly did! And Boyzone's debut on the Late Show in Ireland in their dungarees and naked chests. Grin

CaveMum · 23/11/2024 20:52

@Inthesnug hope you’re enjoying Take That Live at the BBC on BBC2 right now!

It was interesting and sometimes quite sad. They didn't dwell on it but this one guy Tom Watson, he's dead now. But he managed East 17 and apparently sexually abused at least some of them. He seems a right wrong un. This doesn't get covered really so not giving spoilers.
