How long can I expect to be waiting for AA?

Car has a flat. Totally flat, can feel nail right in centre so hopefully fixable (second nail in second tire this week!). AA called 2 hours ago. Recovery time going up and up. Now being told 1.5 hours. I'm at a friend's house with my 6yo so very low priority. Too far to get a taxi. Too late to get a train. Any recent experiences?

Get some sleep- you definitely aren’t priority I’m afraid

Sadly nowhere to sleep. One bed, and only sofa is taken. Not complaining. Wondering how much 40 miles would cost for private recovery. Probs more than a taxi!

You're in a safe place so a very low priority for them.

Last time I broke down on a busy road years ago it took them 6 hours to get to me. Starting to feel nervous 😅

Green flag are better, AA are useless in my experience.

Pieandchips999 · 15/11/2024 23:52

Do you not have a spare? It's really easy to change a tyre if you've got the kit. You could have the spare on and be home by now

HermoinePotter · 15/11/2024 23:52

Do you not have spare you could change?

saraclara · 15/11/2024 23:54

Loads of cars don't have spare wheels these days.

And while I know how to change a tyre, I've never yet managed to get the wheel nuts off since garages have had power tools to tighten them.

Gagagardener · 15/11/2024 23:55

RAC, via Tesco insurance, got to me in 25 mins a couple of weeks ago. Lone elderly woman. (He was parked up at Morrisons, near the city ring road where my tyre deflated.) Sorry @TryingTheBestICan - not helpful to you. But AA not recommended... Hope you get home safe soon.

No there's nowhere in my car for a spare annoyingly! Just a repair kit but wouldn't risk driving on it 40+ miles on a home done repair.

Can your 6 year old sleep somewhere? Have all your stuff ready for when the AA does turn up. Until then, can you try to get some rest and keep warm in a chair/ on the floor? Make sure your phone is charged and maybe ask your friend if you could have some water and perhaps a biscuit or little snack for your 6 year old if you have to wake them to get in the car; they might be a bit baffled and sleepy. Good luck!

He's asleep on the sofa with my sister!

Baswd on recent experiences of a breakdown at a services, I wouldn't expect to see them before 9am tomorrow!

Excellent! Right on time for morning clubs!

Depends on where you are
city fairly good arse end of nowhere not so good

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 16/11/2024 00:16

Crossing my fingers for you that it's sorted in time for clubs! Will AA fund a taxi for you to get home, if no-one can come out to sort the wheel out in the near future?

It ended up being a ten hour wait for us, also on a Saturday, because we kept being pushed down the priority list as we were in a safe place.

Keep pestering them to get an actual AA patrol out to you garage agents may not get you home and you’ll find yourself in a services somewhere
better to stay with your sister even if it’s uncomfortable than that

We're at a friend's house but my sister and son are here. Both SEN and both asleep. I'm just up wondering if I sleep on a wooden floor. This is rather shit. Was also positing last night about how shit I feel. Looks to all be going wrong!

Have you rung them or just used the app?

I had a similar issue with the time in the app just going up and up (also rural Norfolk!) and luckily I rang to ask a human about it - there had been some sort of error and I wasn't actually allocated to a patrol at all! They were with me in around 40 mins after the call.

Both. The app is useless. It reaches the time it says they're going to arrive then just adds 5 mins every 5 mins. It has said they are 5 mins away for 1.5 hours. Woman on the phone was nice, she called the mechanic and said they're on another job.

OP posts:
ThatAgileGoldMoose · 16/11/2024 00:30

Ah yes that's exactly what the app did to me.

I'm glad your mechanic is at least aware of you waiting.

Hoping my brand new tyre is saveable! 😅 typical I've just changed my two back tyres 2 weeks ago. One got a nail last week, one today!

Tell them you've got a child with you, you'll get priority.

We won't because we are in a house and parked on a safe quiet road. I'd feel daft saying that, then them rushing over and my son being peacefully asleep on the sofa!
