Help get my mattress upstairs

Whathaveidone3232 · 14/11/2024 18:55

DH and I can’t get our new king size mattress upstairs. We have been sleeping on the floor for two weeks and I was so so looking forward to a bed but the sodding mattress won’t fit upstairs. Any ideas?

Pivot!! PIVOT!!!!

AnotherVice · 14/11/2024 19:00

I'm sure it will fit but if it's anything like mine was, exceptionally heavy, you'll need a couple of very strong men to manhandle it!

Whathaveidone3232 · 14/11/2024 19:01

I’ve measured the top of the stairwell and the mattress is about 5cm bigger. Can I bend it to get it upstairs? It’s an orthopaedic mattress and costs a fortune so I don’t want to bend it!

Put a message on Spotted page on facebook for your neighbourhood asking for a strong handyman to help for a fee. You should get several replies.

NeedToGetOutOfThisSomehow · 14/11/2024 19:04

Take it up sodeway bend round the wall. It won't damage it it's a split second.

Needanewname42 · 14/11/2024 19:04

Remember mattresses aren't square.
Slide it up to the half landing. Then you might need to bend it to get it round to go up the next bit

Ask your neighbours how they did it, assuming they have the same stairs

Whathaveidone3232 · 14/11/2024 19:06

So wise MNers don’t think bending it will damage it?

Pivot!! PIVOT!!!!

Came here to say this and disappointed to see you beat me to it 😜🤣🤣🤣

Needanewname42 · 14/11/2024 19:08

Yes you can bend it a bit, I wouldn't fold it in two but they'll cope with a bend

Zippymonkey · 14/11/2024 19:10

We bent our new spring mattress around two staircases op in a townhouse - it was hard work but it was fine. No damage.

BiggyJ · 14/11/2024 19:13

Sorry OP, I shouldn't laugh but your dilemma really tickled me 😂

How did you get your previous one up there?

And yes, bend it as you need to, it'll be fine.
We had one that weighed something stupid like 65kg, it nearly killed us but we managed it.
Good luck!

Whathaveidone3232 · 14/11/2024 19:19

Well at least you’re making me laugh which is stemming the tears. I have had an incredibly shit two weeks in a new do-er up house and this is what has tipped me over the edge.

@BiggyJ new house so no previous mattress. We’ve been sleeping on the floor.

It’s this mattress in king size, trying to stop worrying about bending it.

Yes bend it. We just had to get one into the lift room, bending it was fine.

Missionimprobable · 14/11/2024 19:22

Definitely need an extra pair of hands, they're heavy and are buggers to bend.
Bending it for a few seconds won't damage it.
Get it up as far as it'll go, strongest person at the top as it'll take some welly to bend and drag it round the corner, weakest person pushes.
Good luck

Came on to say Pivot

When we were bed shopping they said don't bend a mattress with springs.

CharlotteLightandDark · 14/11/2024 19:30

Ugh flashbacks of getting a superking into a loft bedroom last year.

its ok to bend briefly but can you lift it directly up over the banister?

it’ll be worth it i promise! Mattresses that come in a flat pack box are shite and don’t last

Chowtime · 14/11/2024 19:57

For extra convenience, why not let us handle the heavy lifting by adding our handy Room of Your Choice service for just £29. Our crew will expertly navigate any twists and turns all the way to your chosen bedroom. If you decide to go with our assembly service, you’ll receive Room of Your Choice delivery free of charge.

You should have used this for the sake of saving £29 on a £1699 mattress sorry but it's made me giggle.😂

BasiliskStare · 14/11/2024 21:07

Just to echo a PP could you lift it somewhat over the bannisters. I am sure a quick bend won't harm it too much but they are heavy so with a friend or a handyman might be worth it. From personal experience try not look at scuffs on the stairway walls afterwards 😁

I could almost swear I chose that option!

Anyway, I cried and a super amazing friend came round and helped us get it up. You were all right and it just needed extra welly!

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 14/11/2024 21:15

My mattress was bent 2000 coil springs. By the guys from the mattress shop who were sweating 🥵 by the time it was two stories up.
