How on earth do you use an epilator??? OOOOWWWW!

I've had this epilator for a while. Didn't use it in the summer as was bare legged in dresses mostly, and didnt want to grow my leg hairs....

So, I'm a couple of weeks post shave snd decided to give it a go. FML!! It's agonising!

Are there any tips on how to actually do a whole leg (rather than 1cm patch?).

Does it get better? Better after a bath (warm?) Optimal hair length?

It’s agonising. Gave mine away in the end. No it doesn’t get less painful !

Blarn · 11/11/2024 20:00

After a bath or shower. And you get used to the pain. I've used one for years but only ever on my legs, never wanted to try anywhere else. But it doesn't hurt, just a prickly feeling. It definitely was painful to begin with!

Don’t!

@Christwosheds oddly enough, this was given to me!

Use an ice pack to numb the area before you start. Mine actually came with an ice pack. Now it’s no more painful than plucking eyebrows.

ATastingMenuButItsAllCrisps · 11/11/2024 20:03

I can only use it on my legs below the knee, nowhere else. It still really hurts, but not actual agony like when I used it on my armpit.
Sometimes it snags on the skin and makes a grinding noise. Scream-worthy level of pain.

I really should bin it.

Coconutter24 · 11/11/2024 20:04

It’s hurts more the longer the hair I used to find. It doesn’t hurt me anymore tbh, first couple of times it hurt but now it doesn’t hurt in the slightest. Just keep going.

Stretchedresources · 11/11/2024 20:05

You don't. If you have the right skin tone and hair colour you splurge on a Lumea. Less painful and you're done and dusted in 12 months.

TheDogdidGood · 11/11/2024 20:05

I have used mine on my legs for about a month now and have got used to the pain. Finally tried it on my armpit the other day. Really wish I hadn't! OUCH!
Might give the ice packs a go!

MustBeThursday · 11/11/2024 20:05

It does get better - the more you do it the less hair it's pulling out at once. I only tend to do mine in the summer and the first go of my legs and underarms each year hurts like hell but after that it's less painful. I can only do legs and underarms though!

Jifmicroliquid · 11/11/2024 20:06

I love it! It doesn’t really feel painful to me, I’m aware of the sensation but it’s not really painful.
I look forward to epilating day!

Comedycook · 11/11/2024 20:06

When you're doing it you have to remind yourself that the pain lessens the more you do it as there's less hairs to be pulled out...

ouch321 · 11/11/2024 20:07

You get used to it with repeated use. I was shaky and shudder the first time I used it.
Many models allow you to use it underwater which dulls the pain so if you can run a bath, do that.
I can use it anywhere bar between the legs which is too much for me.
However, like waxing, the problem is constantly having to let hair grow out first. So I rarely use it and just use a razor 95 percent of the time

Patienceinshortsupply · 11/11/2024 20:10

I've had mine for years and don't flinch anymore - I do my underarms every couple of weeks, and lower legs. I think it starts to get easier when the hairs start to thin ....... so it's a case of grinning and bearing it until they do.

Destiny123 · 11/11/2024 20:10

It is agony to start with after a few months don't even really feel it I just run it up and down my legs whilst reading the Internet

ParanormalNorman · 11/11/2024 20:12

I used to use one every day - it hurts the first couple of times because it's having to pull out every hair. After then, the hairs kind of grow at slightly different rates so it's only having to pull out every 3rd or 4th hair and the pain goes right down.

DramaAlpaca · 11/11/2024 20:15

Two paracetamol before you start and maybe a glass of wine for courage. The hair needs to be short, or it will hurt more.

I epilate everywhere I need to remove hair and it's no longer painful at all, probably because most of my hair has given up and doesn't grow back. This is after 30-odd years of epilating.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 11/11/2024 20:15

Legs fine. Kind of felt like getting a tattoo

Underarms nope

Down there. Absolutely fucking not!!

kalokagathos · 11/11/2024 20:17

I have only ever doneknees down for 20 years now and do not feel anything. I imagine, knee up must be a different ball game 😅😂

I’ve just bought a Lumea, scared myself reading the leaflet. Does it hurt ?

Boutonnière · 11/11/2024 20:19

I’ve had one for years and the first couple of times I thought nooooooo! But got so used to it and it really reduced the number of hairs over time. Just the occasional prickle now, though I rarely need it.

Underarm - never tried and don’t think I will ……

BrendaSmall · 11/11/2024 20:19

I just pluck my leg hairs, hardly ever shave, only really come April-May time when I start to wear shorts!
I’ve got hardly a hair in places on my legs now

What do you mean the right skin tone? I've been researching laser hair removal a bit and quite a few fair skinned ladies are saying they now need to shave 🪒😱 is that what you mean? If that's the case, lots of salons are mis-selling the treatment?

Allnewtometoo · 11/11/2024 20:28

I think the lumea works best on dark hair/paler skin?

I think the hairs are probably too long then, I somehow thought longer would be better! I'll shave and try again in a few days.

I don't fancy using an ice pack! I thought warm skin would be better as the hairs cone out more easily

I do it little by little, and sometimes have a glass of wine first Blush
