I’m 35 and I never learned how to plait my own hair…

Am I the only one who never acquired this key life skill? 😂

And is it too late to learn?

Well, I'm 34 and can only plait it on one or both sides. I've got no idea how anyone can do a centre plait on themselves. 🤷‍♀️

bevelino · 10/11/2024 19:25

YouTube is your friend and there are plenty of how to guides to plaiting hair.

GordonLaChance · 10/11/2024 19:33

I can't plait my own hair at all but I love doing fancy plaits & braids in my daughter's hair.
I am insanely jealous of people who can French plait their own hair!!

DiscoDragon · 10/11/2024 19:34

I'm 43 and have never been able to do it either. I can do them on the side but that's it. I have very thick/bushy and unco-operative hair that I've always found really difficult to style.

Bingbangboo · 10/11/2024 19:37

I can't either. No amount of tutorial videos help. It isn't a lack of knowledge of what I'm meant to do, I just can't do it! I can only do a basic plait on my daughter's hair too. We just look on in envy at other girls who do not have a useless mother!

kitsuneghost · 10/11/2024 19:39

No I assume the people that can would be the minority.

BoobyDazzler · 10/11/2024 19:40

I can’t do it either. My hands just don’t work like that.

I get DD to do it for me.

Singleandproud · 10/11/2024 19:41

As in a proper french/Dutch brad? Or a simple three strand braid?
I can french plait the left side of my hair but not the right.

helpfulperson · 10/11/2024 19:50

I can do a simple three strand braid no problem, but would love to be able to do a French Plait.

Ginkypig · 10/11/2024 20:42

I can do a basic three strand plait but only if the hair is in a ponytail first. So I can plait a ponytail otherwise I’m completely fucked and I have tried multiple times over the years!

DCINightingale · 10/11/2024 20:46

Don't give up hope! I learnt to French braid my own hair at 38, it's not perfect but with practice it gets better. I just finally found one tutorial that clicked with me and I understood it, after over a decade of actively trying and failing. So no, not too late!!

echt · 10/11/2024 21:01

Is it a generational thing? When I was at primary school in the 60s the rule was all hair that could be tied back had to be tied back and having long hair I had two plaits. First my mum did it, then I learned.

By the way, looking back the rule was about nits, though unvoiced. And yes, Nitty Norah came round now and then.

OldTinHat · 10/11/2024 21:06

I can't do a fancy plait but used to be able to shove mine in a simple one instead of just a ponytail.

My stupid hair, wavy, is now waist length pulled straight (young me would have been so delighted!). I can do a couple of twists and the plait will stay without securing. But my arms ache and I can't do a full length and secure. Grrr!

ThePoshUns · 10/11/2024 21:10

I'd love to be able to French plait my hair. My arms always end up aching too much

honeyfox · 10/11/2024 21:13

I can french plait my own hair, used to do it as a teen to get waves before the advent of ghds etc. I can't do anything more fancy than that.

Flippingflamingo · 10/11/2024 21:16

I can do a French or Dutch braid in my own hair. I danced a lot as a teen and we had to be able to swap between a proper ballet bun, and a single French braid, quickly for different dances so learned quite young.

For those who can’t you just need to practise.

merryandbrightdelight · 10/11/2024 21:20

I couldn't French plait at all until DD then 4 came home from school insisting she wanted her hair like that, so I was thrown in the deep end and taught myself!

Worried1305 · 10/11/2024 21:25

Thanks everyone. I’m afraid even a simple plait defeats me. Nice to know I’m not alone! Although maybe there is hope if I somehow find the time to practice…

I am rubbish at loads of stuff but plaiting hair is somthing I'm good at. I can do my own and DD's. She always gets compliments on her hair at school and out about. I can do durch, French, fishtail ect,

It took me a few years to learn how to do it properly, just before DD started school I spent around 6 weeks practising on a hairdresser dolls head 😅

Hatty65 · 10/11/2024 21:39

I can French plait my own hair - but can't do anyone else's!

I can do it on myself backwards, if that makes sense, but can't get it right whilst standing looking at the back of someone else's head. (Sorry DDs)

newyear2024 · 10/11/2024 22:17

I can plait my daughters hair in beautiful French plaits, but can't do my own. I've got a big head and short t rex arms so its just impossible 😆 plus my hair is too fine so it ends up looking horrible anyway.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/11/2024 22:33

I've always had short hair. So never been able to do it.

Danikm151 · 10/11/2024 22:38

I used to practice on my barbies and styling head when younger and that upgraded to practicing on my friends- little braids - french, dutch, fishtail.
it got to the point they would bring bobbles and comb with them.

Now at 33 - 2 french plaits is my cba hair style- pinned up when I do it for work.
for me it’s quick to do.

A tip I’ve given others- don’t think about twisting and styling it’s just placing strands over the other and gathering them up.

If you ever did friendship bracelets- its the same just with hair 🙂 practice and you’ll get there.
