How would you tell your OH you won the lottery?

Off the back of the “what would you do if you won the lottery” thread. How would you tell your significant other?

Would you blurt it out immediately or would you plan something special (and what)?

In my head I’d have something elaborate planned but in reality could I keep it a secret to plan something?

Id get him something insane for Xmas then watch his face as the penny dropped 🤣 I'd love it xx

Dollybantree · 09/11/2024 20:06

I’ve thought about this - I’d go and buy dh a lovely sailboat (his dream), moor it in our favourite holiday place that we often visit and then present him with the keys and the happy news! The biggest thrill for me if I won the lottery would be taking all of dh’s financial stresses away (he is self employed and has a very stressful full-on job). Everything he does is for his family and I’d love to be able for him to just relax and sleep well at night.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 09/11/2024 20:09

I'd buy him a smart little sports car he's always drooled over (some old classic. I think it's green...) and stick a bow on it. I'd also ring his boss and say "hi I'm Mrs Popcorn. Mr Popcorn ain't coming back - I've not told him yet. Oh and by the way we ALL know your been bonking that awful woman in the office that no one likes..."

Bluemat · 09/11/2024 20:10

I'd book him his dream holiday at a fishing destination and use his email address for the confirmation to be sent to.

veryyydemure · 09/11/2024 20:11

Yes, I'd have to as id be moving out instantly and he would know I've suddenly came in to money to be rehousing us all.

MillyMichaelson · 09/11/2024 20:11

By pulling up to the house in a Pagani Zonda yelling 'get the fucking passports'.

Snorlaxo · 09/11/2024 20:14

I don’t have an h but I’d buy something like a dream holiday (first class) and present them as a gift.

Ginkypig · 09/11/2024 20:17

I would show a quote for a custom made HUGE acrylic aquarium with separate sump big enough to be a room divider in place of a wall and say that it was for when we buy our house, we best get looking. Oh and you best get on to (name of specialist keeper) to stock it.

to be honest the truth is I’d scream in their general direction at the very moment I found out until they calmed me down enough to actually get me to tell them what was going on.

HappyNewYear2027 · 09/11/2024 20:18

I'd take him to our local estate agents and say let's buy whatever house we like

Unfortunately I doubt it'll ever happen

BoobyDazzler · 09/11/2024 20:20

I’d tell him instantly. I can’t imagine keeping something like that from him for any length of time.

CollisionCourse · 09/11/2024 20:21

These are great ideas and I'd love to join in, but the reality is I'd go running to him immediately and blurt it out in a jumbled flap!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 09/11/2024 20:25

My Mum and Dad won a large sum of money on the Pools in the early 80s. The letter came through the door and my Mum opened it, rang my Dad at work (on the house phone) and said "are you sitting down?" He asked why and she told him. He said "I am now"

It solved their immediate problems with affording the mortgage payments at 18% interest, bought us a new family car, an amazing holiday and an extension on the house. I was only really interested in the fact that I was taken to town and got £300 worth of new clothes.

Pedallleur · 09/11/2024 20:29

Quietly, poss in a text so our teenage daughter doesn't know and so can't tell her friends or suddenly think she will be following Taylor around the world and staying in hotels with room service.

Iwantabrightsunnyday · 09/11/2024 20:31

We would try to move to New Zealand

With my ex I wouldn’t have, I’d have just ran off never to be seen again.

I’d tell my current DP that he can quit his job and I’ll pay for everything

mdinbc · 09/11/2024 20:37

We did win $25,000 (about 14, about GBP) in a contest at a grocery store about 18 years ago. I was at the store, called him immediately at work. There was some happy swearing involved, so I'm glad he wasn't on speakerphone.

We went out for a lovely drink after his work and discussed what we would do. We put part on the mortgage, part in kid's education accounts, and took a trip just the two of us, which was our first.

mdinbc · 09/11/2024 20:38

Sorry, about 14,000 GBP

I love these!

I think I’d take him to see a west end show (something we do when we can) but book a really, really fancy hotel rather than getting the last train home afterwards. I think it’d be the only time we’d ever bother with a fancy hotel but it’d be confusing in a great way before I told him.

….assuming I didn’t just blurt it out as soon as it happened.

That’s so lovely and wholesome 🥰

Yes the OP is assuming just I'd tell him...Wink

haje · 09/11/2024 21:04

We have always discussed this. We or I would immediately book a treehouse at center parcs and head there. That would signify the win and the importance of leaving immediately 😂
