What are your hobbies and interests/ am I boring

I love reading and walking. I do yoga a couple of times a week but enjoy the benefits of it more than the actual yoga so wouldn’t call it a hobby.

However I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t seem to think either reading or walking are proper hobbies. When I read I’m seen as doing nothing whereas someone who does a sport or arts/crafts is seen as doing something productive.

When I say to people I love walking they always ask if I’ve done various challenges like the three peaks or a coast to coast walk. That doesn’t really interest me, I just like getting out for a 2-3 hour walk in the countryside. I do sometimes do longer or more challenging walks (children permitting) but it’s the actual walking and scenery I enjoy rather than the challenge.

I’ve always been quite proud of getting enjoyment from such simple things, but recently I’m feeling like my interests aren’t “enough” and that I’m perceived as boring and as having no hobbies.

I’m a reader and walker too! You are not boring as you’re going things with your time and are interested in things. Everyone’s interests are different. What you may find interesting others won’t and vice versa.

Reading is as much of a hobby as a sport. You could have a book challenge, or talk to people about the books you read, or go to a book club, if you wanted. I rate them on Goodreads & challenge myself to 30 books a year. Next year I am doing an a-z book challenge where the title begins with each letter of the alphabet. I’m hoping it will encourage me to read different genres.

I'm like this. I read for an hour a day before bed, love going for a walk (preferably without DC) and I do a tai chi/yoga/Pilates mix class three times a week.
DH who is mid thirties so a fair bit younger then me has an allotment as his hobby and would rather stay in then socialize.
Everyone thinks we are boring, but we travelled a lot and enjoy the simple things now.

AudiobookListener · 07/11/2024 13:24

I think people who don't read books are boring.

EskarinaWeatherwax · 07/11/2024 13:28

I'm a reader, walker and yoga person here too. Like you I also appreciate the benefits of yoga more than I enjoy doing the yoga itself. I definitely feel self-conscious when people ask my hobbies and I say the above, I always feel like I have to say more but I don't really have much else.

Birdseyetrifle · 07/11/2024 13:28

You are not boring. My lodger is boring.

Barely leaves the house, only works 27 hours, doesn’t read or exercise in any way. Only things he does is watch television, game and smoke.

There is nothing remotely interesting about him, I can see why he is divorced. Has no idea what’s going on the world either.

You sound like a normal, active person.

Cloouudnine · 07/11/2024 13:29

I’m a reader and a swimmer. Swimming really can be boring tbh! But the reading is great - not boring at all!!!

RaraRachael · 07/11/2024 13:30

Reading and walking are about the extent of my hobbies too. I don't like socialising and to turn up at a group activity would fill me with dread!

FragileWookiee · 07/11/2024 13:31

Reader here too 🤚🏼 I have no other hobbies.

WongKarTie · 07/11/2024 13:32

I'm similar, in that reading, walking and world cinema are my three main hobbies, and I'd like to think I'm not boring but I do try to shake things up and try out new things now and again. Currently learning how to crochet and brushing up on my French a bit. Also getting a bit more into dog training.

I think you're fine though - all of that reading will be exposing you to tons of ideas and that will stop you from being boring.

Oneearringlost · 07/11/2024 13:34

I don't think having a hobby/hobbies automatically makes you more interesting.
Some of the dullest ( to me) people I've met have lots of hobbies.
I love reading and walking...and if anyone, anyone! tells me to join a choir ( especially rock choir), I will be sick.

Cloud44 · 07/11/2024 13:36

Im another reader! Want to make the effort to do more of it. For those of you who do yoga, what do you find are the benefits? Does even say 15 minutes here and there help?

ObtuseMoose · 07/11/2024 13:38

I read, knit, crochet, sew, scrapbook and collect things. My hobbies are all solitary, so I guess they could also be classed as boring.

CatPlanet · 07/11/2024 13:40

I think your hobbies count as hobbies. Whomever is calling them boring or not being ‘real’ hobbies is insufferable.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 07/11/2024 13:43

My latest hobby is learning French on Duolingo and everyone seems to think that's boring. It isn't as boring as school French used to be!

RaraRachael · 07/11/2024 13:46

and if anyone, anyone! tells me to join a choir ( especially rock choir), I will be sick.

I'm with you on this one! I used to be in a "proper" choir but due to Covid I found I couldn't reach the high notes any more so gave up. I've no intention of doing glorified karaoke.

I wouldn't want to do any hobby that involved other people! 😂

ThePoshUns · 07/11/2024 13:48

I'm a walker and do yoga as well.
I walk most days as I find walking more relaxing than sitting watching TV.
Sometimes I just walk my local area but I do do 'proper walks' as well.
I also crochet a bit and enjoy SUPing when the weather is good.
I consider them my hobbies.

ThePoshUns · 07/11/2024 13:50

I read and do jigsaws as well so am super boring!

lowlight · 07/11/2024 13:50

I have the same hobbies as you. Hobbies are just things you enjoy doing in your spare time - they don't have to be tests of endurance. These fashionable 'challenges' where you push yourself and your hobby to the edge, whilst getting others to cough up via sponsorship, are so dull....

henlake7 · 07/11/2024 13:52

Im def a fan of introvert hobbies so reading, walking, gaming.
Also like to exercise (cardio, weights, pilates) and I quite like cooking/baking which feels like more of a life skill but I suppose could also be a hobby!
TBH I wish I could go out for longer walks but half the appeal is taking the dogs and they are all now pensioners so cant walk far.

welshmuma · 07/11/2024 13:53

Just another perspective ...
I honestly I have NO hobbies - nothing.
I have very few friends.
I struggle to find enjoyment in anything.
I cannot work due to several severe medical issues.
I very rarely leave the house for my own needs.
(Just to do the school run or taking the children to do things)
I am literally within the same four walls doing nothing all the time.

So in comparison I would say you're doing well with the hobbies you have and are enjoying :-) X

2triangles · 07/11/2024 13:54

Walking and reading are my top two hobbies too! I almost always sling a camera round my neck to snap anything that catches my attention on the walk and that seems to enrich the walk a lot, helping me look at my surroundings in new ways.

KnopkaPixie · 07/11/2024 14:42

Look at these people. They aren't boring! They have absolutely wild and crazy hobbies!
I wish I could meet men like that!

My hobby is leatherwork. I love the smell of the leather, and the challenges the work offers. I make little card cases, and book covers amongst other things. I make them mostly for raffle prizes, school fairs etc.

GameOfJones · 07/11/2024 15:31

I would say my hobbies are reading and walking too! I love both and read every day. I also like gardening and growing my own fruit and vegetables. I really enjoy finding new podcasts to listen to and I listen to them on my walks so combine those two interests.

None of those are particularly "exciting" but they are what I enjoy doing in my spare time.

I don't particularly care whether other people think I'm boring. I'm very content and happy with my life which is the most important thing. I would find someone that never read books pretty boring too, so it's all subjective.

If you are content, be proud of that and don't question yourself or worry about whether others think you are interesting enough.
