Nice places to eat, Lancaster

Posting here for traffic.
I'm in Lancaster this weekend and would love to hear about nice places for coffee/breakfast, lunch and dinner. I don't need anywhere really fancy or pricey; I especially like independent, quirky little places.
TIA!

Brunch journey social- city centre amazing food.

If you like french food - quite simply French is nice

Go for coffee either at atkins inside the castle walls or at The Hall on China Street.

If you fancy a drink and probably some live music Kanteena is fab. They have some street food vendors as well

We stumbled across a great place called the Whale Tail in Penny Street. It is vegetarian possibly vegan but great food and very popular.

If you want posh Quite simply French as already mentioned. Lots of nice places in Lancaster these days Pizza Margherita or the spaghetti house for Italian, the Sultan for curry, the sun or the borough for nicer than usual pub food

Thanks everyone. No, I didn't want posh. Am more into street food, a good down-to-earth chippy/Eastern Mediterranean/Italian/Thai etc, or nice but not pretentious gastropub type places.
Journey Social looks good to me for brunch, and Whale Tail – thank you.
Anyone know Brew cafe? I spotted it in a review site and thought it looked to be up my alley.

There's a very good Jay Rayner review of that!

Free parking and good food at Lancaster Leisure Park Country Style Kitchen.

Medusa Turkish is nice food.

Best Italian is Etna's complete with original decor from 1975.

Love the Merchants too.

Saturday is Market day and Sabah's street food stall is ace, ace, ace. And she's lovely. Always good for a chat & tries to feed you up! As is the Gözleme stall.

The Borough is laid back and excellent local cooking with a proper chef.

The Quarterhouse on Stonewell is delicious, small plates - next door to the Dukes, and across the road from great pizza at Pizza Margherita.

On the Market Square is a fantastic Chinese (the only decent one I'd eat at between Lanc and Manc) Aroma Chef I think it's called - but yum.

Standard Sunday Roast at the Toll House - really pleasant dining room, great staff.

Atkins for coffee on China Street & opposite is a lovely calm quiet Japanese place.

The best curries used to be Nice & Spicy (sob, no longer in business) and the Sultan, but the Sultan has changed hands and is fairly bog standard Bengali food now. But the location is splendid: an old Methodist Church.

And oh, yes, the Whale Tail for really retro vegetarian food - it's in a court opposite the evangelical church on Penny Street. And to get to Etna, you need to find Sun Street via a ginnel from the main street. There's a really nice coffee place in the Music Room, and also the Sun Street cafe, if it's still open.

Thanks everyone.
