Can anyone suggest a nice town / city for a break between Xmas and NY

Looking for a nice place to go for 2/3 nights with a 2 hour train ride of Cardiff please?

London is out as there’s major engineering works at Paddington and we don’t want to travel by bus. We are going to Birmingham in the spring so don’t want to go there.

What is Bristol like for nice bars and places to wander? Looking for somewhere with a bit of atmosphere, nice pubs and restaurants and things to wander to see in the day. Cheltenham? We’ve been to Stratford. I’d be grateful for suggestions if possible please?

Bath?

Bristol is great, as is Bath. Both have a good selection of bars, pubs and restaurants and pretty places for walks. Bristol is ‘edgier’ and more arty with a great music scene, if you’re into that. It’s also much bigger than Bath so potentially more difficult to get around without a car. Bath is much easier to get around on foot, lots of lovely literary museums to visit and the thermal baths too. Both cities have a very different vibe but are worth a visit!

Oxford

I immediately thought of Bath.

Brighton is lovely at that time of year- loads to see just walking around and great shops and food. Oxford usually quiet, but in a nice way!
