I don't know what to do. I'm peeing loads but can't poop. I ate a punnet of mandarin on Thurs & pooped out little pellets. Then yesterday I did the same & got a tiny bit of movement but I'm used to being very regular.
I wonder is it hormonal or perimenopause related?

You need to take medication from the pharmacy.

SweetSakura · 04/11/2024 08:05

You need to go to the Dr. Severe constipation can be dangerous

Flaxseeds and a few kiwis with the skins on are your friends here.

Although such a sudden change with no apparent explaination is probably worth getting checked out.

I thoroughly recommend Fybogel, you can get it in the pharmacy or at big supermarkets.

Attelina · 04/11/2024 08:09

Prune juice .

PermanentTemporary · 04/11/2024 08:09

I agree with Fybogel and endless walking, with lots of stop/start. I've had people recommend sparkling water.

You might have eaten something a day or two ago that has blocked you up. If you are passing pellets, it is moving, just hard. You have a few options. I would recommend buying a small bottle of lactulose or a small box of movicol sachets, whichever is cheaper. Take 20 mls of the lactulose OR 2 sachets of movicol daily. Read the instructions. If that doesn't help, buy some glycerin suppositories. Drink loads of liquid and walk a lot.

Ilovegoldies · 04/11/2024 08:10

Lactulose. Stay home once dosed.

FiveTreeHill · 04/11/2024 08:12

Have you taken any medications? After a week some prunes or mandarins is going to do fuck all

MikeRafone · 04/11/2024 08:12

Prune juice and gp surgery for nurse or doctor appointment

Pumpkinspawn · 04/11/2024 08:18

Thanks everyone, I'm passing wind too, I'll go to the pharmacy this morning & hopefully will be able to get things moving

Drink loads of water - dehydration makes constipation worse.

Encourage your gut to move... walk, massage your stomach, try some gentle yoga ()

Use meds that stimulate the gut and soften the stools; docusate, senna, lactulose, movicol, glycerine suppositories...

I'd stay clear of the fybogel until things are moving again, it adds bulk but if you are all ready feeling full that might just make you more uncomfortable.

Passing the first stools if they are very hard can be uncomfortable. Some anusol or silicon lube can help. A hot water bottle can help if you have stomach pain.

Make sure you are in a good position when sitting on the toilet. Ideally knees higher than hips. We have a little folding step in our bathroom for this very purpose.
Vaseline on you bum before you go can help the poop slide out.

I've been taking Magnesium Glycinate (half a dose) every day which is known to attract water to the digestive system. It's made a huge difference.

I drink loads of water but I think my whole body is "dry" these days due to some sort of hormonal change, but doctors are no use.

Katkins17 · 04/11/2024 08:36

Try magnesium citrate it works a treat. You get it as gummies and take 2 a day ( depending on the strength) ... get some... you'll thank me later!!!

PirateJim · 04/11/2024 08:47

I know it sounds a bit ‘woo’, but you could try reflexology. I googled to find out where on the sole of your foot is related to the bowel, massaged the specific area for a few minutes and it worked (after about a hour). Might be worth a try.

beeeeeeez · 04/11/2024 08:49

When you get sorted I can recommend psyllium husk capsules from health food shops for menopausal or IBS bowel issues. Take 2 a day with plenty of liquid. They work mechanically by absorbing liquid and giving your bowel something to push against, rather than irritating your gut like senna etc.

Also worth finding out if you have IBS. If I get constipated, it's usually a recurrence of this. Buscopan or similar if so.

Good luck, poop poop! (Said Mr Toad.)

Ignore all the food and drink suggestions they will not be helpful if you are impacted
Go to the pharmacist and get proper advice .

PumpkinPantz · 04/11/2024 09:03

You need movicol or something like it. You need to soften the blockage, food isn’t going to do this.
are you able to be home the next few days as you’ll want to be near a toilet.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/11/2024 09:05

Dulcolax is great. Take before bed and it gets things moving the next morning.

if this becomes a regular thing see your GP

It’s great you’re going to the pharmacy. I feel like perhaps you should get checked out at the docs - it’s a long time and I feel like they always say that changes suddenly to your bowel habits are worth getting checked?
If you get more pain or are feeling sick then even more so.

clarepetal · 04/11/2024 09:16

Glycerin suppositories will do it within the hour. But stay home to be near the safety of your toilet.
Poo pellets suggests the poo is too dry and you don't have enough water in your diet? Good luck. Constipation is horrible.
