How can boiler and immersion both break at the same time?!

The control panel thing for the boiler has been dodgy for around 5 years. It needs to be switched off at the electricity as it doesn't always switch off when you tell it to. boiler itself was serviced around a year ago and was said to be fine. The man said it's a valve issue that's causing it and not the boiler itself. I got a heating engineer out when it first started happening and he pretty much said the same. I was planning to switch to a hub thing at the time so didn't address it and have never got round to it and have just lived with switching off the electric when needed, which isn't always.

Started putting on the heating now and again a couple of weeks ago (showers are electric so boiler not used in the summer) and it was fine. Last night went to put it on and nothing. I thought ok, need to get that valve replaced finally. Fancied a bath tonight so have had the immersion on for around 3 hours and just tried and water is stone cold! Lots of noise when I run the hot tap (as normal when immersion is used) but no hot water?

It's surely too much of a coincidence for both to break at the same time but surely they are completely separate?! Any ideas?
