What's good at Aldi?

We've just had a shiny new one open near us and I fancy a mooch. Never been an Aldi shopper before as I like my shopping delivered, but I've got a bit more time to shop now. Tell me what's good to buy from there.

Fake McDonalds hash browns
cheap wine for cooking

Anisty · 30/10/2024 11:26

Ps if you see Strachans ice cream at your branch - that IS Mackies icecream, just cheaper. Same factory, same recipe. Excellent quality. Mackies is a quality Scottish brand made with all milk and cream. None of that non milk fat stuff. It is really good.

Their layered yoghurts in glass jars are lovely
bog standard cava
fake pimms
their fruit and veg are pretty good
Their greek strained yoghurt
frozen black cherries are a bargain
cheap chocolate is great for cooking with
red onion and goats cheese puff pastry slices

BIWI · 30/10/2024 11:27

Like @buffyspikefaith I do most of my shopping there now, and haven't found anything I didn't like. The exception being their cat food which mine refuse to eat!

Their wines and spirits are very good - consistently win awards - and are exceptional value.

And their version of Diet Coke is amazing. You'd never know it wasn't DC.

I'm gutted that Aldi stopped doing online wine and Specialbuys; our nearest store is a 30 minute drive away so we normally just shop on holidays or in the run up to Easter and Christmas. Their chocolate and Stollen etc is pretty good and we usually send the outlaws a Christmas hamper (hopefully they will still be doing those mail order). The cheese isn't bad if you let it age for a bit.

The fake Jo Malone stuff is great (room spray/diffusers/candles). The fake Le Creuset seems to last well (thats a whole new thread). Merino wool thermals are pretty good as are some of the garden pots.

Pretty much everything is at least OK. The chocolate is very nice, and the posh crisps are good too.

Wondering what posh crisps are?😂

pizzaHeart · 30/10/2024 11:31

I agree about Moser Roshe chocolates, also their eggs are cheaper, their nuts for baking are cheaper and good, their stir fries are cheaper and good. They have interesting cheeses and yogurts (specially selected ones), good range of breads and good croissants.
Never again things: tea, toiletries, jams - but I’m fussy in that area.
Pizza and bananas is ok but not the best ones.
Tomatoes and apples are hit and miss.
Medium chicken, caster sugar, potatoes, carrots are the same as everywhere.

Floofydawg · 30/10/2024 11:32

Ooh great, thanks all.

Where do you find the candles? I looked in the middle aisle but all they had were some Yankee ones.

The salted caramel dark chocolate is my favourite.

TBH, these threads always have conflicting recommendations/things to avoid. It's best to go and try things and see which ones are to your personal taste.

I've loved things which other people say are horrible and vice versa.

I’m looking through this thread and certain things like the chocolate, the ice cream, the Jo malone dupes and the alcohol (particularly the wine) keeps cropping up so there’s definitely some merit in asking others opinions.

Blueberrycreampie · 30/10/2024 11:37

One thing I always go in for is their microwaveable Mexican Rice. Very cheap and tasty and super quick when you're in a hurry. I buy several packets at a time.

Wondering what posh crisps are?😂

The ones that are pretending to be Tyrells rather than the ones pretending to be Walkers.

ohthejoys21 · 30/10/2024 12:48

Chemenger thanks!

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 30/10/2024 13:05

Aldi is a perfectly fine supermarket. You can buy what you normally have in your weekly shop. There are some products that are branded, but not always regularly sold.
I’d avoid cheap ham, essential toilet roll/kitchen roll. That would be it. Everything else is perfectly acceptable.

Helenloveslee4eva · 30/10/2024 13:09

Most things are good to excellent.

try everything and you will still be quids in if you don’t like some of it !

GameOfJones · 30/10/2024 13:15

Estevez Chilean Malbec is excellent.

The prosecco with the yellow label.

No.1 scented candles.

Any of the Hotel Collection hand wash.

Steak.

The posher varieties of crisps and chocolate are very good.

Their Twix and Snickers knock off chocolate bars. Can't remember the name....Jive maybe?

Lobster and Crayfish macaroni cheese and scallops in the shells with champagne or mornay sauce (both in the freezer around Christmas time).

Florentines (also around Christmas)

Pretty much all of the cheese is very good.

Andoutcomethewolves · 30/10/2024 13:16

The meat is good - eg their fillet steak is far cheaper than the equivalent in other supermarkets and is really good quality. Nice cheese selection and good chocolate, biscuits, yoghurts and snacks. I don't drink but apparently their own brand spirits, wines and liquers are great!

One thing I'd personally avoid is fruit and veg - we used to go to Aldi for our entire weekly shop and fruit/veg was often rotting by day two or three, even if kept in the fridge etc.

Randomuser9876 · 30/10/2024 13:19

I find all the cheeses good especially the manchego and parmesan. Lots cheaper than other supermarkets too.

I'm currently obsessed with the baby jacket potatoes in a packet in the fridge section. They're delicious, go with everything and take 8 mins to crisp up in air fryer.

Love the gravalax too.

HappyAsASandboy · 30/10/2024 13:22

Nordpak fake Lurpac butter
Milano Salami
Most of the red wines and Prosecco
Mamia nappies
Gianni ice cream
Lacura deoderant

CookieMonster28 · 30/10/2024 13:23

Pad Thai meal kit
Wine & the organic prosecco
Baby nappies (if needed!)
Steak
Sushi (my fav supermarket sushi!)
The new 'gu' dupe cheesecakes

Fruit and veg good if you're going to use it within a couple of days.

Don't worry, someone will be along in a moment to say it's greasy/foul/smells of toilet cleaner/whatever.

BakedAl · 30/10/2024 13:27

The frozen veggie range is good, especially the battered sausage. Fruit and veg is usually good and they do have a good beer and wine range. Snacks and sweets go down well but I stick to Tesco for crisps as my boys are fussy. They also do a good chocolate granola but I haven't tried their other cereals.

Excellent is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. It's all fine if you are on a budget is really as far as it's possible to go.

CrispyCrumpets · 30/10/2024 13:34

Extra virgin olive oil.

SatinHeart · 30/10/2024 13:42

We don't go a lot as not our handiest supermarket, but:

Nappies/wipes/baby pouches
Tiger rolls
Organic prosecco
