Changing to google pixel from iPhone

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 30/10/2024 06:18

Would I be making a stupid mistake?

I have an iPhone 11- it doesn't have enough storage and I'm just fed up with it.

I've been looking at the pixel 9 and with trade in I can get it for £650 which seems a good deal!

Oh and I do have an Apple Watch too so switching isn't just as simple

Mxflamingnoravera · 30/10/2024 07:55

I am a longtime Apple user and was considering moving to a Pixel, until I moved house and had to deal with a Google Nest heating system and realised how much data Google holds on me. I hate the Nest and have decided to stick with Apple for my next phone, simply because I think Google would know even more about me.

I also noticed that somehow I'd set Google as a backup for my photos and my storage had filled up. I pay for Apple storage, but If I delete from Google it deletes from my Apple storage. I don't even remember linking to Google.

I am becoming deeply concerned by Google and their ability to profile me and so when I come to change phones I will get another Apple. I'll buy it from Apple, unlocked with a sim only subscription and keep my data private.

It all depends, do you care about data privacy? If you do, I'd stick with Apple. If you don't, then switch.

You'll never look back and wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

I have had pixels for years and love them, so intuitive, great battery life etc.

Whole family are now on android, having been iOS at various points. DH tends to stick to motorolas, ds and I have pixels (I have the 8 pro and he has the 6) and Dd likes Samsung.

Sanctimonious99 · 30/10/2024 08:01

I moved to iPhone from pixel solely due to my new car (a mini) not having android CarPlay. It had been 9 years since I’d had an iPhone and the difference is staggering in that time. Despite my inherent dislike of Apple the iPhone is simply the best phone I’ve had. The pixel is waaaay heavier and the last few android phones I had (the previous 2 were pixel) all had lots of glitches, like chrome freezing and having to be closed then reopened all the time. I’ve had zero glitches from my iPhone and have it set up as close to a google phone as possible ie no Apple apps, all google. Even when I get another car with android carplay I just might keep using iPhone

CaptainSeven · 30/10/2024 07:42

@HappiestSleeping I don't really use YouTube and I've never heard of waze!

I don't have a personal login for Google and when I use it I block tracking etc. I tend to use Firefox as a browser which is more private.

I know I can't avoid it completely but I do what I can to minimise ANY company having my data.

Having a Google phone would give them so much data it's unbelievable. So not having a Google phone is an easy way to avoid giving them data. I loved my Fitbit but got rid when they were bought by Google.

I appreciate the Apple approach to privacy.

I get it. I have trash email accounts that I use and clear my cookies every time I shut down.

Although Apple don't sell data, they do share it with affiliate companies who then sell it, so it isn't completely secure, even with Apple.

AlmostChristmasWoo · 30/10/2024 08:07

I switched from iPhone to pixel a few years ago and I wish I'd done it sooner. They're all I get now, fantastic camera and battery life.
People are very loyal to iPhone and will sniff at your for daring to move to a pixel. I've felt a little internally smug this week when two colleagues said their iPhones were running slow on separate occasions 🙈 I remember that and it's not something I've encountered with a pixel at all.

PurpleChrayn · 30/10/2024 08:09

Don't do it.

Android is shite.

CaptainSeven · 30/10/2024 08:11

It's not just their attitude to data and privacy (I think Apple was GDPR compliant before GDPR existed!) I appreciate.

It's their attitude to things like - approving apps for their App Store. Their standards are so much higher so less risk of any malware or phishing via apps.

I'm not an expert by any means but I do what I can, stay interested in this subject and Apple makes it easier for me to be more confident in the privacy and security of my data.

LadyQuackBeth · 30/10/2024 08:11

I'm outside a lot and every iPhone I've had (for 15y I was fairly loyal/too lazy to change) had the battery drain when it got cold.

Pixel doesn't do this, so I'm glad to have switched. I've also found I'm not reaching for it constantly the way I did my iPhone, so it might be "worse" but for me, being less addictive has been a great thing.

Onabench · 30/10/2024 08:14

I have done this recently after swearing I wouldn't but I just couldn't afford iPhone anymore and justify the crappy battery and storage.

It was painful transition but only because apple make it difficult. Transition aside, the Google pixel is the better phone and I wish I never got sucked into the apple madness to begin with.

Amazing storage, battery is brilliant. Camera is great

Whyherewego · 30/10/2024 08:15

These days there's relatively little difference between apple and android. A few things are different (swipe down vs swipe up) but generally you'll get used to it and then save a bundle !

Bananaram · 30/10/2024 08:26

I've got a Google Pixel 7Pro, it's a great phone. I haven't had an iPhone in years though to know how comparable they are though.

T4phage · 30/10/2024 08:28

Samsung is better but Pixels are okay. I have a 6a and it's doing everything I need. No glitches. The camera isn't as good as Samsung. I only have this phone because I couldn't afford another Samsung Galaxy.

friskybivalves · 30/10/2024 08:32

People with Pixels...I genuinely couldn't figure out how to get between web pages. I know it sounds insane. I have had plenty of different androids (Mi, Redmi, Samsungs) and was iPhone all the way previously. But my god that Pixel 7 was a horror.

I open another browser if I need another webpage.

Yes! But that seems super unwieldy. I just couldn't flick between pages or apps without getting hopelessly lost and having to start from scratch. Being able to instantly hop betweent things is Mobile 101 surely.

Attelina · 30/10/2024 10:27

Very stupid mistake.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 30/10/2024 12:00

I have tabs here, is that what you mean?

Well, I just kind of put up with it because it was a cheapish phone. The screen is cracked though, even though it had a screen protector on. I've been quoted £150 to change it and the screens are £89 to buy to do it yourself. My Samsung screen was fine.

The pixel is okay if it's all you can afford, but don't expect too much.

Daftasabroom · 30/10/2024 12:22

I'm on my 3rd Pixel, I wouldn't change for anything.

I'm confused, surely you just press the tab button and it shows you all your open tabs and you pick one? Doesn't seem particularly unwieldy to me 😶 how does it work on other phones? I assume they'd all be similar!

I have a Google pixel 6 that I've had 2 and a half years now and the battery is still going strong. I love the phone and just waiting until black Friday to see if I can get a deal on a pixel 9 pro.

Me too!
Will pm you if I find a deal!

Nat6999 · 30/10/2024 12:33

Ds swapped from Samsung to a Google Pixel Pro 8, he loves it. I swapped from IPhone to Samsung & much prefer Android & the fact that the battery life is so much better.

teacoffeeorpassthegin · 30/10/2024 14:44

Thanks all
I'm now considering a Samsung 24 FE

I would get a free Samsung watch and my Apple Watch is old so that would be useful!!
