DD19 has pleurisy - need reassurance please

DS19 is off-work at the moment with what he thought was aches, pains and a constant cough. After much nagging from me, he called 111 (he travels a lot with his job and wasn't near his own GP) and was seen within hours in the out of hours GP centre. They've diagnosed him with pleurisy and prescribed him 5 days worth of penicillin. DS didn't have a full dose yesterday as he collected the tablets late and he's got 1 out of 3 left to take today.

The pain in his ribs has spread and it hurts him more to cough and talk etc. I'm really worried and am thinking he ought to get seen again by a GP but my common sense is saying that his body needs to have another day of tablets for them to start working.

Can someone reassure me please? I've telephoned my surgery and have twice been disconnected after waiting on hold for over 25 minutes each call. The AskMyGP online service closed at 12 too.

Tried to edit my title - should say DS.

He needs to give the antibiotics time to work - he should see a difference in the next 24-48 hours. The GP won’t do anything further for him unless his symptoms have worsened significantly or he has new concerning symptoms which it doesn’t sound like he has?

Plenty of rest and give the tablets time to work. I had it last year, it’s horrible but I felt better after a few days of antibiotics. Sleeping on my front helped a lot too.

Thank you @Allofthelightsss My mind is working overdrive imagining pneumonia setting in so I needed someone to talk to. I'm grateful for your response.

You’re very welcome, I know it must be scary for you.

I’m sure someone with more medical knowledge will be along soon, I’m only speaking of my own experience but if you do think he’s getting worse at any point do take him back to be checked. I hope he’s feeling much better soon.

Thanks. We'll give it another 24 hrs for the tablets to kick in. DS just has to rest!
