Things you never realised you were naive about

As a kid I read a lot and in books whenever someone, especially a child, was kidnapped there was a ransom demand. As an adult, I now realise that usually it's an abduction involving assault and ending in murder. However, I never quite realised until this moment that the whole kidnap-for-ransom stuff was a sanitised version of crime fiction and looking back I was really naive. Thankfully naive actually, I had an appropriate wariness of strangers but no deep-seated fear.

What were you naive about?

Seriously, until about a decade ago, I thought when newspapers reported a death and wrote 'nobody else is wanted in connection to this incident' that they had apprehended the person who did this. I had no idea they were reporting suicide.
