Hiring a rug doctor

Carpets are quite stained in some places and haven’t been cleaned in years. I hired a rug doctor and have spent the last hour cleaning carpets. It’s utterly useless! I’m using the correct solution but can’t see how the detergent is being sucked up properly on one run.
I bought a Vax during lockdown and found that soaked the carpets and lumps of carpet came out so it’s been in the garage ever since .
Getting them professionally cleaned will cost about £300. I can’t even do the stairs with the Rug doctor. So disappointed .

Has anyone else found a better solution?

Are you sure you are using it correctly? I hire one at least once a year to do the sofas and stairs (with the crevice tool) and it does an amazing job, but you do have to go over it a few times...soak, suck and repeat! I have a dog, cat and toddler around and the sofas come up like new. However if the carpets are really badly stained it might be that nothing is going to really bring them back up, sadly.

Does it not come with a tool for the stairs?

I’m following the instructions. It says not to go over the same area twice, but I am anyway. I didn’t hire the hand held tool because I didn’t realise I’d need it for stairs.

We've hired one on a couple of occasions and no issues, cleaned rugs, car upholstery and car mats, great result.
