What if I scratched his car?

Driving home earlier and there was a tight space I thought I could get through and the car opposite thought the same. He was shouting at me (couldn't hear what he was saying) I slowly kept moving, scratched my alloy on the kerb I am sure but that was it.drive forward and stopped at the traffic lights then in my mirror I saw him get out in the road and look at this car - I don't think k could have scratched it?? But now I am panicking what if I did? Do people go to police about this? I am thinking worst case scenario, am I being dramatic?

Not sure about the shouting thing - who had the right of way?

You would know if you had made contact as there would have been a scraping sound. You said it was your alloy - you have checked your alloy I guess?

I would have pulled over having seen that in my rear view mirror to check my own car, having seen what he did. He obviously felt concerned enough to check.

Yes people do go to the police about this as it's property damage.

Oldnproud · 26/10/2024 12:32

Not sure - could depend on the angle of the two cars - but wouldn't your wing mirrors have been the most likely point of contact, and you would have seen and heard if that happened.
Otherwise, are there any signs of contact on the side of your own car? If his had any marks, yours probably would have too, so if there aren't, i don't think I would worry.

Thanks @Arlanymor
I'm not sure either of us did technically, I wasn't expecting him to start moving after I did.
Yes I wish I had now. Tbh when I saw he got out I thought maybe he was in a bad mood and coming to shout at me but when I got home I thought wonder if he was seeing if it www scratched. My car looks fine though.
Ok I did wonder if it is the kind of thing people call police over, makes me feel sick 😭

@Oldnproud I can't see any marks on my car so hopefully not ? I just worry the police will show up at my door, I am someone who overthinks and worries so maybe just thinking worst case scenario

If there are no marks on your car then you're probably fine - try not to worry and get on with the rest of your day (hopefully in the lovely sunshine as we're currently having where I live!) I get that it's a worry, but what's past is past and if there is no evidence of contact then you should be fine.

Sorry but someone always has right of way. Can you explain more about where exactly this took place?

zigazigahhhh · 26/10/2024 12:55

@pinkyredrose there were parked cars on both sides of the road, I felt I got there first and he was a bit further away so I went and as I was already moving he started going. I was on that bit of road first

this is why i got a dashcam. As it records sound too if i find myself in a situation that i think i may need the video for later, i narrate what I'm doing

So in this scenario it would be "there are parked cars each side, he's stopped, i can see i can get past if he waits, he's waiting so i'm going, I'm moving now he's started moving too but i have nowhere to pull in he needs to stop..."

Even if he did go to the police there would be no proof other than if he had a side mounted camera that captured the scrape. Additionally from what you've said, if there was significant damage to his car, you'd also see that on your car.

coffeesaveslives · 26/10/2024 14:33

I'm not saying that you did hit him, but don't assume that because your car is okay, that the other car didn't sustain any damage. It really depends which part of your car hit theirs and what angle etc.

birdling · 26/10/2024 18:26

If the cars did collide, wouldn't it have been just as much his fault?

YourSnugHazelTraybake · 26/10/2024 18:32

Op if as you passed you scraped your alloy on the kerb then there can't have been cars parked at your side of the road at that point? So at that point you must have been completely on your side of the road, so the right of way would have been yours where you passed each other.

Probably it would go 50/50, but it really depends on the road and who technically has "priority" as such.

zigazigahhhh · 26/10/2024 21:16

@YourSnugHazelTraybake ok thanks!! Yeah it you picture 3 parked cars on each side of the road I start driving, as I'm getting to the 3rd car he starts coming, I pass and get as close to the kerb to let his car carry on

Thansk every one. I don't actually have any real reason to believe I hit his car and if so I don't think it would be my fault. It was just the panic that 'what if' because he was clearly angry and my mind went to worst case scenario

Was it on a hill. My DH is a little obsessed with cars going up the hill having priority?
