How do you pre teens wear their hair?

My daughter proclaimed this morning that the way I do her hair is too young now she's 10. No more bunches, apparently! So how are your pre-teens wearing their hair? I am looking to expand my repertoire, but if she can do it herself, even better.

Yeah my 9 year old has outgrown bunches too sadly!

For school, it's mainly a French braid that she has finally mastered herself!! But I still like to do one and sometimes two to vary it a little bit. She likes fish braids too.

We do half up and half down quite a bit too with little clips to make it look pretty. If it needs to be properly tied, then we also do like a half plait and then tie the plait up into a ponytail so the plait leads into it.

Occasionally we do 2 small ponytails on the side of the hair and then group it all together into one big ponytail.

She'll grow back into it.

My university dd came home last weekend with two bunches. 🤣

What is bunches?

Another word for pigtails around here.

Rayna37 · 24/10/2024 19:25

@MumChp that's fascinating I'd totally disagree with your answers but Mumsnet is great for teaching us we don't all have the same dialect.

Ponytail- high or low but a single "bunch" of hair usually at the back (side pointy tails were a thing at one point?!)

Bunches- high or low but hair split two separate bunches

Pigtails- two separate plaits (braids to an American)

Falseshamrok · 24/10/2024 19:28

my daughter has her hair down, in French or Dutch braids (fishtail plait is really easy too) ponytail or half up half down.

Indecisivelurcher · 24/10/2024 19:54

Here they're called bunches but pronounced bunchieees, and pigtails would be two plaits. A half up is called a sides-up. I usually go bunches or two sides ups because I can't fight against her natural side parting, it messes up many styles!

School rules tied back. So always in a low pony tail.

isodontknow · 25/10/2024 05:08

Usually a (messy) single low plait that she's done the night before after washing it.
Her second most favoured is a bun.
Sometimes a French plait, very occasionally two.
Occasionally a high pony tail.

Whatamitodonow · 25/10/2024 05:11

Mine had hers all cut off! Much easier 😂

isodontknow · 25/10/2024 05:18

I'm almost at the point of threatening that!

VioletCrawleyForever · 25/10/2024 05:22

Down or pony tail.

Unless she's going to scout camp then it's 2 thought pleats.

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 25/10/2024 05:43

In my 40s regular wearer of what I call bunches - low, loose ish ponytail on each side. Are you telling me I'm too old for them 😂

Often rock two French plaits.

Brainded · 25/10/2024 05:58

She really should be able to do her own hair at 9. Mine does a ponytail, low plait or half up/half down. On the odd occasion if she wants a. French plait she will ask me to do it (as I do them tighter than her). That’s it.

UncleBryn · 25/10/2024 08:52

Low messy bun (she used a donut when she was younger as stayed in better), ponytail into a plait (or 2) or French/dutch braids on sport days. Have a look on Pinterest for some ideas. My DN also likes a bit of hair wrapped around the band so you can't see the band.

SkankingWombat · 25/10/2024 09:20

My 10yo has recently had her hair cut to bob length, but she has 3c curls so it still needs tying back for school. She switches between a simple soft, stretchy headband, a short poofy ponytail, space buns, Dutch braids, and a full head of braids. Today she's combined the ponytail with a headband.
