Completely frivolous bin related query..

I was wishing my FB friends a Happy Bin Day this morning, as you do, and it suddenly dawned on me that when I was a child a very long time ago we called it Rubbish Day.

Anyone else? Or is this yet another of my family of origin's unique eccentricities....

I was thinking this is yet another troll thread but then I recognised your name.

Never wished anyone a happy bin day. Wtf is that?

ReadWithScepticism · 24/10/2024 08:43

You could always combine the two and wish people a rubbish bin day, but they might think you were being unkind.

CurlewKate · 24/10/2024 09:02

@LittleGreenDragons I did say it was completely frivolous. Although I was actually slightly wondering if it was another thing where the UK has moved to American English.

I wish people a happy bin day because it makes me laugh. Fine not to celebrate if you don't want to-let a million flowers bloom.

Always referred to as "bin day" in my family. Not American as that would be "trash day" surely?

LittleGreenDragons · 24/10/2024 09:07

I have no problem with you wishing it. I just don't know what it is as I've never heard of it.

twentysevendresses · 24/10/2024 09:53

Always been 'bin day' where I'm from. Although I've never celebrated it before 🥰

CurlewKate · 24/10/2024 10:33

I asked my niece what my much older brother called it and she said he called it "Oh shit- was it today? Day"

Do I have to go out and buy a new front door wreath for bin day now?

FelixtheAardvark · 24/10/2024 10:39

"Dustbin Day" in Sarf London.

Thecomfortador · 24/10/2024 10:45

For me it's recycling box, bag, tub and bin day. Shortened to bin day.

trainedopossum · 24/10/2024 11:47

Bin isn't American.
They might say bin to mean a storage cubby or container but rubbish is called trash or garbage and goes in a can, even if it's now plastic.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/10/2024 12:43

I think it's always been 'bin day'.

I wouldn't have thought it owed anything to America. When I lived there for a couple of years, in a rental 'townhouse community' we had to haul our trash to the garbage skip.

CurlewKate · 24/10/2024 13:30

@Davros "Do I have to go out and buy a new front door wreath for bin day now?"

You mean you haven't got one?

@CurlewKate
I'm going to fashion one from recycled packaging. There's plenty of that!
