Getting rid of a car - a runner but only just (near Reading hopefully)

I need to get rid of a car this week as I’m moving house and won’t be able to take it with me.

It’s drivable but runs out of MOT in five days and isn’t worth paying for the repairs it would need to get it through the test. It would have some value for parts but I’m not actually fussed about getting any money for it (have tried to sell it on eBay but bidders just flake out once the auction has ended)

Is there somewhere I can just drive it to and hand over the keys, that would be legal? A scrap yard or something? We Buy Any Car wouldn’t work I don’t think, for something that won’t be drivable? So ideally if I can hand it over and then get to a train station - Reading, Maidenhead at a push - that would work well.

Please can anyone advise? It’s the one thing I haven’t yet sorted for a fairly short-notice move!

Scrap it with Redcorn. They pay the most for scrap cars and come get it

look at your council website.
we were able to relinquish our car that way

Thank you @ForgettingMeNot - just looking at their website. Do you think 5 days would be sufficient (so they could pick it up and it still be legal)?

My car broke down. Unable to fix. I sold it to a used dealership, they came to tow it away. It was so easy. They came the next day . You can use any website. I still got paid for it.

Take it to a scrap yard. We took ours to one off the A4 by Aldermaston.

Actually in similar situation but still trying to find a new car. Current one running but not worth repairing. Unless we can get a decent trade in we will scrap it.

Try webuyanycar. They will (it’s literally their name!) very easy process.

Just Google 'scrap my car in...' where you are. They'll be websites that'll give you an idea of price they'll give you. Try to avoid the ones where you put details in and they'll get back to you with a quote unless you fancy getting calls from various places. They'll just turn up, stick it on back of a loader, do the scrap bit of the V5, and transfer you the money.

I second Redcorn 👍🏻

Thank you for all the suggestions - it’s really helpful to see there are some options!

I hadn’t even looked at the V5 so didn’t know there was an actual bit for scrapping it 🤦‍♀️ Sounds like it should be doable within the timescale, anyway

Most of these places will collect in a day or so usually, so quick. If parked on your drive makes no difference to if MOT expired if they pick up. Even if on road then VED will run for October, and insurance won't cancel until you tell them to. Chance of anything being noticed anyway is minuscule, so I wouldn't worry.

We buy any car , takes about 30
Mins if that

Fire brigades take old cars to practice putting out vehicle fires.

My son's car's engine blew up (12.30am, A6, raining heavily). He sold car through 'we buy any broken car.com'. They should give you something for it. His was collected within 72 hours of it being dumped on his driveway by AA recovery.
